In all the years I have travelled on these trains I have never noticed that the large racks had a built-in umbrella holder! As for the price, it's ridiculous; they are trying to milk the enthusiast and they will end up getting rid of them in two years time in a fire sale. In every company where I have worked it has been accepted practice that the staff have concessionary access to company items. There are many LU staff who would love one of these for their hall or garage and it would be so easy to strip a few trains and supply them for a few quid each. It would also help improve the respect of some staff towards the management; instead they are treated like football fans and ripped off. Disgraceful.

The A-Stock luggage racks are more expensive than the (much more substantial) rack off of a 4VEP which I got from an architectural salvage firm (LASSCO) who presumably had their mark-up... I'm having to re-think the future decor of my hallway in the light of this information...

Has anybody made the LTM aware of the situation regarding the price of the racks. I'm sure they would welcome any comments.

I'm sure that money will be put to good use. What with the consultants who were hired to design an appropriate retail package for the racks needing their fees taken care of. Hauliers for transporting the remaining standards to the scrapyard are expensive too. Then, of course, the LTM needs more virtual interactive stuff. So, you know, people can get a tempered glimpse of allowable history. What it was like to be a mechanics apprentice fixing penny-farthings in Dulwich, circa 1898, for example.

For what it is worth,I reckon they should be priced around the £100-£150 mark. It would be sad if they sit unsold, and then are sold for scrap due to "lack of demand"....I hope Ohmslaw is right about a clearance sale....

;D ;D ;D You've got to admire them haven't you. LUL's oldest train (not by design, by default) and they choose to cash in on them, based on the interest for the stock - which is largely based on it's age, so full circle there then...
Makes you wonder where the profit for this "scrap" (I'm sorry, but the rest of the train is considered that) will end up. Certainly not in any staff pocket nor any charity in London.
The Metropolitan Line story? Oh please. Will we have this told to us again in 10 years time when they're trying to sell of Door Buttons from the "classic" S-stock.
Is it any wonder that everytime we send a train to Northwood, we spend a day or 2 fielding "tresspass" reports (which slow the railway to a crawl) of people trying to access the siding to grab their own relics**. Bring the price down and speed up the railway.
**Please do not do this. Whatever the prize, is it really worth being bowled over by a Chiltern Train which won't stop as easy as an A or S-stock.

Hmm... my father-in-law always called the through lounge of my terrace "a corridor". Now there's an idea for the next time I re-decorate.

it does not look like there was an intention to sell these as they were seen in the scrap pile at eastleigh.to be fair they should sell and plough back into the system.around £125 would be a fair price with perhaps a one off discount for oaps' and low income.

£125 is still way too much for those of us on low or negative incomes! From what I can gather the price of Aluminium is roughly £1,600 per metric tonne at the moment...

yes,one sold on ebay for £100,however the ownership is real reason not just a piece of metal for the price much as a dvd not the cost of the item what it symbolises

If it is possible for you to help yourselves them you should do so. These things clearly mean a lot to you guys and the benefit to LU in terms of staff workplace memories and the associated morale boost far outweighs the few quid raised by some backroom boy in the museum. Sorry to be so blunt but rules set by jobsworths are destructive and there a times when an organisation has to get its priorities right.

Hear hear.
The luggage racks and flourescent tube should really be fair game for any staff that want them. I think we'd all have prefered a secret handshake with some entrepreneurial fitter than being held to ransom under a notional excuse of it being 'for a 'good' cause'.
Has anyone signed up?

Well, I would still like to have one... I do think TfL are onto a winner here, they know there is interest... captive market!
As a side issue, when the SR 1940 stock was withdrawn from the Waterloo & City Line, staff were literally giving away mementoes, such as running numbers, vent grilles and other easily salvageable bits. Same with the 1959 stock; a quiet word with someone at one of the depots ensured a Master Controller, brake handle, Duplex Gauge, destination box [yes it works] cab door tread plate and train number boards were all saved... along with a seat from the saloon. The person in question looked at my stash of wares and suggested I take the whole car instead! True, but I doubt the local council would have been happy.
I wonder if Booths of Rotherham noticed the ½ ton of missing scrap... ;D

The mail-shot tonight states:
Decommisioned Originals
We have been busy getting them clean as they leave public service and packaging them ready to send out! This will take place in early March but you will be able to pre-order the large and small racks soon and we will send you another email in advance so that you are the first to know when they are able to buy. The medium luggage racks will go on sale at a later date once the A stock trains have been fully decomissioned as this size is extremely limited.
We've had loads of requests about this exciting opportunity so we might no get back to enquires for a couple of weeks, please bear with us.

wasn't there supposed to be a security guard at that site?.its hardly surprising that some people will try to access that area given the price of these items and easy access.these racks are overpriced and it could be to dissuade a ebay quick profit.

I counted them yesterday evening (*) and there appear to be 104 small, 8 medium and 32 large luggage racks on each A stock train. At the quoted prices that works out at just over £25,000 per train. If LUL managed to hold onto 40 trains-worths then that's a cool million quid.
* Shows what a sad person I am!

Jesus-wept, they certainly haven't lost out on extracting what they could from these effectively worthless relics, think about the moquette now being applied to cushions and harlem cube as well. More than a million quid to be had - but the luggage racks, TfL must be doing well to get roughly £1m.

Why would anyone want a Met fluorescent tube? I know the connections are different, but did you know that an ordinary bi-pin tube will work as well, it just has a tendency to fall out now and again.
