Are there any pubs left inside the ticket barriers
on tube stations ? I remember Moriarty 's on Baker
Street , another on the inner rail platform at
Sloane Square and the outer rail at Liverpool
Street. Then there was the social club at Wood
Green. I assume the ban on smoking did for
those bars open to the public and the drug and
alcohol regulations saw off Wood Green.

Bit off topic, but one station (at least) in Europe has a pornography theatre!

I once had a gander around Tower Hill disused station. There was some kind of bar or cafe in the station and all the stools were stacked up in the tables like it had only been closed the night before even though it had been closed for some years! Quite spooky.
The Wetherspoons Met Bar at Baker Street used to be the old LU recruitment office. Those Metropolitan Railway plaques mounted on the ceiling. Are they genuine?

The Wetherspoons Met Bar at Baker Street used to be the old LU recruitment office. Those Metropolitan Railway plaques mounted on the ceiling. Are they genuine? It is perfectly possible. Chiltern Court, the building containing the Met Bar, was originally intended to be a hotel, similar to other Railway Hotels that grace many of the London Termini. However what with one thing and another by the time it was completed the idea of a hotel had been given up and the building was instead given over to luxury flats. One thing that did survive from the original plan was the provision of a restaurant and this is now where the Met Bar is located. Being a Railway restaurant it would have been highly likely that the ceiling was decorated with the Met's coat of arms and coats of Arms connected with the area served by the railway. What I am sure of is that the ceiling was so decorated when the area was in use as LUL's recruitment centre and so such decoration must have dated from a previous use of the room.

Am I right in assuming the main building at Kew Gardens is now a pub? - I know it's an NR station but the thought of watching D Stocks and 313's going past whilst having a pint seems like a bit of a novelty.
Are there many locations where the pub is very close to the railway line and thus allowing good observation of the trains (I know that is not quite the thread title but I'm interested now)?

And IIRC the pub on the station at Kew is a 'Firkin' - another fine chain of ale houses! Very tempting to have a defect there and just be forced to have a calming pint or several (For the benefit of anyone monitoring on behalf of LU's D&A policy - that's a joke!) Not quite what you had in mind Alex, but I also quite like the bar on the concourse at St Pancras - I've had a few pleasant pints in there with Tubeprune! Again, not actually on the station - but just opposite Didcot there's a couple of decent pubs too - and you can see the trains - if you bother looking up from your pint of course!

On the subject of the Met Bar - i believe that the signage on the ceilings is indeed genuine.
I was told that once the false ceilings of the recruitment office were demolished they were discovered and needed little attention to restore them. Whether that influenced the decision in the naming (or should that be renaming?) I don't know!

The station building at Clifton Down station in Bristol is an Australian pub, but I don't knwo what the viewing is like (I've never been in). Not a pub but there is a very nice cafe with a terrace that is on the platform at Betws-y-Coed. The viewing there would be good, but as the onyl time I was there it was pi$$ing it down and I was with friends who don't share my enthusiasm for railways I didn't get to see.

So the consensus is No then I take it . I still think the pub at Sloane Square was
on the inner rail platform but I certainly wouldn 't swear to it. I think I 've
remembered another one, on the stairs leading down to the Met platforms at
Kings Cross. It was on the right hand side going down .

The Three Guinea's at Reading station is a good 'un for watching trains go past (it overlooks most platforms but is adjacent to platform 4, the down main line).

Yes IIRC it was outer rail at Sloane Square as sometimes a driver or guard would drop off and get himself a packet of smokes or gum or something. Also there were some kiosks or something on both platforms at Embankment. Some outer stations also had platform kiosks for sweets and smokes also. Heathway definitely did.

Working on the Epping/Ongar line had its moments. We used to knock down pheasants and pick them up on the next journey and sell them for 50p each. Often we used to stop the train and pick blackberries and apples between the stations and on Sunday's, we had 30 minutes turn a round time at Ongar to nip down the pub.

Wasn't there a bar on the platform at Stratford back in the 60/70s. Probably now a waiting room.

Certainly the buffet on Stratford platforms was licensed, sold draught Bass as I recall and may have once got itself into the GBG. I don't believe there are any pubs trainside of the barriers on LUL anymore, however if you want to sit and drink and watch the trains go by in a railway enviroment, the this place might suffice (warning, website in German) www.isarbraeu.de/front_content.php?idcatart=51 Abit of a long way to go for a night out admittedly but you do get a fantastic view of the trains with your half litre... For those that don't read German, the pub is the old Großhesselohe Isartalbanhof station building on Munichs S7 S-Bahn line which has been converted into a micro brewery and pub. Cheers, Steve.

Indeed you can - I was behind two blokes the other day who were complaining that it was ''disgusting'' ...... well, what do you expect from a buffet on a railway platform ? Still - they got the bloke behind the counter to give them a (apparently nicer tasting) refill.

Ah The Lemon Tree. Colloqually known by some railway staff as The Lavatory, on the standard of tea served.
