>>Unlike AC current, DC suffers a considerable voltage loss over a long distance.<< Actually, nothing to do with AC or DC. The point is that DC electrification is usually at low voltage (600 to 700 volts), whereas AC electrification is 10000 volts or more. Low voltage means that a high current (many many amps) is needed, and high current through the conductor rail's resistance means that electricity is lost as heat. Do a Google on Ohm's Law for more. Yep the resistance of the conductors is the key, steel rails are not the best conductors but better conductors have worse problems and are very attractive to thieves too especially in sparsely populated places. Of course a standard train starting from a stand pulls around 2000 Amps instantaneously.

You know all this about Ongar and the lack of juice could have been so, so much different: clicky, use the zoom and look in the top right hand corner.... That is labelled "Signal Supply" - how is that related to Traction Supply? Is there a corresponding Traction Supply diagram, with a corresponding proposal for Blake Hall? And what was beyond Blake Hall, to which dashed lines go? It refers to 600 V, and 33 1/3 Hz frequency - is that ac, or non-smoothed dc?

According to the so-called 'experts' at Wikipedia, a special 4 car unit ran on it, because LT wanted to save money on a sub-station at North Weald.

When did the unit move to Northfields?

That is labelled "Signal Supply" - how is that related to Traction Supply? AIUI in the New Works plans all Substations were traction supply too. Traction supply maps were generated towards the end of a commissioning, when the red/yellow/green/mauve et al were all sorted.

That is the 600v 33 1/3Hz ac signal main supply which I assume at the time would've been derived from an 11kV substation feeder supply. It is interesting to note that Mansion House is shown as a 440v signal main supply, until now I had often wondered about the significance of 440v link boxes at sites on the Northern Line having only ever worked on 600v signal mains. Obviously an older technology was in use then, one that I never knew about in all my years in the job. Beyond Blake Hall to Ongar, the signal main would have run to Ongar and then looped back to Blake Hall S/S for its double end feed. Signal main arrangements were an art in themselves and remain so as everything in the same control area must be fed from the same source. Naturally there are detailed maps of the signal main showing all the link boxes and terminations, step down track transformers and also the looping arrangements to ensure the integrity of the signalling system.

Hmm...... no air main supply between Epping and Loughton Yes there is! It perhaps is not clear to you but the solid lines are joined rather than crossing one another. Again there would be detailed 'air main' drawings of the 120PSI compressed air supplies showing the locations of compressors, 120>60 PSI reduction valves, 2 way isolation cocks, 3 way equipment feeding cocks, drainage grids and reservoirs and the feeding arrangements for IMRs etc. I can't recall now if whistles are shown on those drawings or not. Actually, thinking about it I suspect that in 1938 the compressors would've generated compressed air at 60PSI rather than 120PSI.

I think Fred took voluntary severance, rather than actually retiring. So when he left he would have been in the region of 50- 65 years old. I have no idea what actual age he was when he left.

Hello again Just found a really interesting video on YouTube so I thought I would share it. Now to add to this I've got a couple of questions and I apologise in advance if they have already been asked but I couldn't see them when I looked. 1) In the video it shows a four car white 1962 stock running the branch. According to Wikipedia the train was specially modified to cope with the lower current on the branch. Now when I watched the first Central Line Drivers Eye View by Video 125, the branch was being run by a red train of some description. What is the story behind this? 2) I read on here before that a 1992 stock made it to North Weald. If this is correct are there any pictures of this anywhere and also had did it make it there on the lower current. 3) I take it that when the 1992 stock was being designed they had already planned the Ongar closure. Or was there a 4 car 1992 stock train produced to run on the Ongar branch? 4) Finally has anybody got any pictures of the booking halls at either Blake Hall, North Weald or Ongar? Interested to see what they looked like. By now you all know I like pictures to look at. Thanks for your help! kabsonline Glad you liked the video... it came from me! My father and I had a great day that time in September 1993. I too am desperate to see that 92 stock photo at North Weald... I remember seeing it at the time and need to track a copy of the London Underground Rolling stock book down that contained it. I took loads of photos on that day trip.. please let me know if anyone would like to see them. Stuart

There is a photo in "London Underground Rolling Stock" from 1993(?) with a photo of the 1992 tube stock at North Weald. EDIT: As a full 8 car set I believe, too. Hi, if you have a copy of the book please could you confirm what year the edition is from with the 92 stock photo so I can try and purchase a copy from ebay or amazon? Many thanks
