Regarding station refurbs, do the "designers" ever take in to account any of the historical features of a station? For me on of the best things about the tube is the history that surrounds it.
When i was at oxford circus this morning i noticed that they seem to be putting in the braces for the ubiquitous white enamel cladding.
Does anyone agree that this looks horrific? Why can they not keep the period charm at these stations? Its bad enough that most of the Yerkes period stations have been violated with horrible and untidy shops blocking what look to be original entrances and exits, to be replaced by faceless holes in the wall. But then they have a station that is as period and well looked after as Northfields or Edgware road. Is it the PPP that has made a policy of ruining the old stations?

Some of the Yerkes stations are being wrecked with fugly new tiling, and yet others are being made absolutely gorgeous with new tiling.
Take Buffalo and Rook, for example - the old Bakerloo tiling has been replaced with blank while tiling with black borders. Black - on the Bakerloo platforms...

Fugly? Buffalo and Rook? translate please TOK! I believe that "Fugly" is a portmanteau of the words "F*cking" and "Ugly". As for "Buffalo and Rook" I'm guessing perhaps Elephant and Castle? It fits the name and it is also a station on the Bakerloo line and at least one other line (otherwise TOK would have just said "platforms"). As the other line there is the Northern, then black tiling is imho even more inapropriate (although I've never been to E&C station, although I might be later this month, depending whether it or Moorgate is the best station to change at on a journey from Paddington to Borough). As for "Buffalo and Rook" I'm guessing perhaps Elephant and Castle? I'm calling to mind the old joke you may have heard about the American woman who wanted to fly to Hippopotamus, New York State, USA... As the other line there is the Northern, then black tiling is imho even more inapropriate (although I've never been to E&C station, although I might be later this month, depending whether it or Moorgate is the best station to change at on a journey from Paddington to Borough). Chris Use the Bakerloo to B&R; the manic crush between Paddington and Waterloo empties out very rapidly and you can sit down for the short distance travelled. Just make sure that the interchange with the Northern is available when you try it.

Now I will ask you to clear up something that a driver said to me 40 years ago and whiich I never found out the answer. He said "Which station is nicknamed 'Cock and Whistle'
Now I have from that day to this thunk and thunk but I STILL don't know the answer or even if it were a tube station he meant? Do any of you have any clue as to where this mysterious place is?

On the subject of the thread title: The next stage of the Earls Court refurbishment will be starting soon. This will involve total replacement of the Piccadilly line lifts, taking around 12 months, and refurbishment of the train shed roof. Apparently they're looking at six months just to erect the scaffolding!! Still if you've been there when it's raining, you'll appreciate the work it's gonna need to plug all those holes ;D ;D
