I've noticed that a great many 8" aerials are starting to sprout from small white boxes attached to cable runs all along various areas of the deep level tunnels. Are they part of the Connect project, or are they being used to enhance the existing system?

I can't say I've noticed them! I can only assume they are for the Connect project, as I believe the current radio system does not use antennas, favouring the old 'leaky feeder' system (or something like that! I await correction from my more learned colleagues!)

Yup, I've spotted them - and in open sections too.
I don't know for sure, but I think you're correct in thinking that they related to the Connect project.
Certainly there's been no improvement to the existing system of late! I know from one exchange I had with probably our best Controller last week that he was a man on a mission about the radio performance!

Apparently, as I understand it from talking to one of the ECT DMTs, the District will have the 'basic' Connect system operational by next year, then the rest of the lines will get the full Connect system, and (as always) the District will then be the last line to get the complete Connect system.
To be honest, as long as I have a train radio which can receive and transmit messages, I'm not too bothered about all the additional things the system promises!
Hopefully the handheld part of the radio will be classed as a 'basic' requirement, because in my opinion they're essential for going back to investigate defects or resetting handles etc.

Firstly, the hand held radios will be an automatic personal issue to all T/Ops, so your wish will be granted.
Secondly, I find it interesting that I/O's from 'other' lines are going on a briefing, particularly as we're earmarked to get them very early in the programme and even more so as I'm one who'll be doing the briefings for the District - and nothing'sbeen said/sent to me about these 'events'......

I dont know in what order they are doing it, not all I/Os are being invited either. All it really needs is one or two from each depot to know, then they can 'go home' and pread the word so to speak! There will be three types of radio; the hand portable, that will be issued to drivers and used by DMTs when on incident turns, fixed mobile, which is like what will be fitted in the trains but used in places like stations or book on centres, all be it not many of the functions would be available and lastly the other type os the full system which will be fitted to all of the trains.

Topic Summary Posted by: TheOneKEA Posted on: Mar 22nd, 2005, 5:39pm I've noticed that a great many 8" aerials are starting to sprout from small white boxes attached to cable runs all along various areas of the deep level tunnels. Are they part of the Connect project, or are they being used to enhance the existing system? One of these aerials was installed on the side of edgware road signal box about a month ago (already covered in pigeon s**t!). It has replaced a broadband wi-fi box that we had on the next to the window. Speaking to someone from IT he said it was to do with extending TrackerNet, to give train information in "black hole" areas like ERD-HSK & ERD to HM(met) and that all the trains will have transmitters in the cabs! A sort of alternative to TIMIS (rip) Dont really see the point in the whole system, when connect will be in soon!!!! If anyone else knows more about this I would be interested C5

Anyone mind telling this old git what the hell an I/O is? An I/O is an Instructor Operator - what you, and I, would have called a road trainer in days gone by . These days I/Os do more than just road training. We also deliver classroom based training as well as stock training on some lines, including on the District and Circle & H&C lines. Oh - and myself and District Dave are both I/Os ;D ;D

Anyone mind telling this old git what the hell an I/O is? The cheap and nasty economy version of a combined Road Trainer and Trainman's Inspector.

Even more interesting is the fact that the interface we are supposed to have in the SCC (so we can talk to you drivers directly on minor matters such as wrong'uns) hasn't even been fully designed yet! So whenever the Met gets it, from that side of things it will be very quiet!

I wonder if I/Os are vindictive . Only when circumstances dictate that it's appropriate!
