Look foward to seeing it when I go. I read a very negative view of the tour on the Internet with health and safety being the main theme of the tour. I hope this is not the case!

Such a lame ruling (really, is anyone going to make their millions from selling Aldwych pics?) should have been made clear at the time of booking rather than including this info with the tickets. Actually it was made clear at the time of booking tickets - the T&C's were clearly available to anyone who wanted to read them.

The T&Cs say no digital SLRs when in reality they won't accept a camera with interchangeable lenses.

I went yesterday and, as you would expect in any place which is normally off-limits to the public, there was a short h&s briefing at the start of the tour. After that the focus was entirely on explaining the history and and showing us the more interesting features of the station. When we left we were all handed an excellent little booklet about the history of the station. Thanks to LUL and LTM staff & volunteers for making this possible.

Are you sure it was the ERU that had done all manner of things to the 72 stock. Could have some other organisation?

I went on Saturday. Really enjoyed it. Thanks to all who put the time and effort in. Shame we didn't get to nose about the train. If my Flickr account works, I'll put my pics up later.

Went today. Really enjoyed it. The only thing I would say is that some of it was rushed. I know we were only meant to be down there for an hour, but a couple of the talks were cut short for timing reasons which was a bit annoying. Interesting place though and the staff/volunteers were very helpful. I'll also see if I can upload my pics later on.

Interesting place though and the staff/volunteers were very helpful. I'll also see if I can upload my pics later on. I went today as well and really enjoyed it too! I agree with what you say though about a couple of talks being rushed. One of the volunteers on the main platform was really knowledgable and had a lot more to say but we were quickly rushed over to someone on the other end of the platform who - no offence - seemed to know very little, relied heavily on a document and spoke very quietly. Having said that, we did get adequate 'free time' to take photographs of both platforms, the lifts shafts from the lower landing and the lifts at ticket hall level. Such a lame ruling (really, is anyone going to make their millions from selling Aldwych pics?) should have been made clear at the time of booking rather than including this info with the tickets. Actually it was made clear at the time of booking tickets - the T&C's were clearly available to anyone who wanted to read them. It didn't stop them mentioning it a lot while we were there! I guess they had no choice though. They made a very good point that those who wear high-heels would be in a very difficult situation if there was a need to evacuate via the tunnel to Holborn.

What bad things does it show, beyond the obvious fact of the train not having been cleaned for a long time. Also, were the train doors opened or weren't they part of the trip? I haven't seen a proper 72TS Mk1 photo yet...

Train doors were not opened, and the interior lights were not on since the power was not on.
Since the railway remains in working order is it conceivable that it could ever carry passengers again on an open day like this? It would be great to include a trip to the Holborn platform(s) and back in the tour.

Ducatisti, thanks for the photos, some recompense not being able to get a ticket. I am interested in this one --- www.flickr.com/photos/27565507@N06/6411339067/in/set-72157628173734575/--- where the fourth rail has apparently been removed from the side of the track adjacent to the platform. The normal practice is for this to be installed on the far side for safety reasons. Does anyone know history of this?

This is a length of track which hasn't seen a train since 1917 but in the far distance on the photo you can see a short length of fourth rail still in position on the far side. The angle of the photo somehow makes it appear as if there is not enough room for a far-side fourth rail near the photographer, but there is.

It was never built at all. None of the original Yerkes tubes featured them as built, though they were introduced later, starting with extensions. By then Platform 2 has already closed, hence the track ending up in its unique state.

whilst browsing for something else, I found this video of the last day of normal operation. londonist.com/2011/11/video-aldwych-tube-as-a-working-station.phpWhat is the device that the guard takes off the train about 40s in. Appears to be some kind of chain clamped to the rail and hooked over a fitting on the front of the train about solebar level. Doesn't seem solid enough to stop the train doing a runner...

My photos so far are at www.flickr.com/photos/paul_fox/sets/72157628095244699/They need to be pruned and labelled when I get the chance. Please note that some of these were taken at a staff briefing day prior to public opening, and hence there was no restriction on camera type.

That is a rail anchor and does the job you thought it didn't ! Gosh! So why do they do that, is there much of a risk of it rolling away?

Thanks for the replies - I must have been there at some point in my life, I've visited every Piccadilly station aside from Heathrow 5, and I can't ever recall any station below ground without the pit.
Anyhow, thanks to those sharing pictures, always appreciated.
