Has anyone got a list of approximate build dates for the battery locos? (Yes, I know many of them have been rebuilt/altered a lot since initial build, but I'm after the initial build dates.)
Also, I'd appreciate a general indication of livery states and their periods for these vehicles.

Russ Here's a list I've got up to 1965:- L41,L42,L43 - 1937 L35,L36,L38,L39,L40 - 1938 L55,L56,L57 - 1951 L58,L59,L60,L61 - 1952 L76 - 1962 L20-24 & L25-L32 - 1965 This list is from a LT Locomotives and rolling stock book. Printed 1965. Will see if I can find any more up to date information later tonight.

Will see if I can find any more up to date information later tonight. Thanks Dennis, but you've answered the area I am most interested in, i.e. pre-1965. On the livery question, when did the battery locos stop getting painted in dark maroon? Russ

On the livery question, when did the battery locos stop getting painted in dark maroon? Russ The info I've got Russ, is the first battery loco to be repainted yellow was L15 in March 1979.

All thats left now are the 64,69 & 73 locos. All pre 64 locos are scrapped and 85 ones are quitely rusting away in Ruislip Depot.

Thanks guys. Why are so many of these machines now idle? Surely the number of engineering trains are as many as there used to be? (Perhaps I should go and hang out late at night at Leytonstone and see if anything transpires...)
And can anyone confirm what the bogie wheelbase is? (What I'd really like is a good drawing of one of the pre-1965 ones, like L43.) Oh well, at least it's another excuse to take the tape measure to the next Acton open day.

Apparently, the type of brake fitted to the 85 locos wouldn't let you move the train with a slight brake application on,which you could do with Westinghouse, and the ability to do this was desirable, especially on long rail trains,so as the type of trains these locos could work with was limited they were quietly left to rot.

All pre 64 locos are scrapped. You forgot L35 built in 1938 which is at the LT museum at Acton.

Am I right in saying that they are restricted to 'series' to avoid tearing the track up???

No,in fact they have 4 motoring positions,shunt,series,series/parallel and full parallel, plus there are individual notches between each position. The only locos that were restricted to series only were the old sleet locos.
