On a refurb D stock.
The driver will select the route from a choice of options ( Ealing - Upminster, Olympia - Upminster, High Street - Richmond) etc ....
For a short working the driver selects a working that encompasses the short working eg for Dagenham East to Parsons Green, Upminster - Wimbledon is selected. If the start point is in the open global positioning satellite (GPS) will determine where the train is and the destination is selected by scrolling up from Wimbledon to in this case Parsons Green. In a tunnel section eg Tower Hill, the start point will be selected by scrolling as well. It is therefore possible to display any D stock District station as the destination (stations beyond High Street to Edgware Road are not available for route selection)
Any known disruptions can be coded in at the start or at any time.
The train will then automatically trigger all announcements at appropriate points based upon it's Global Positioning Satellite reading and the operation of the door open circuit. In tunnel sections it counts wheel revolutions.
The driver can select additional optional announcements as the journey progresses, such as "for your safety and security this train is equipped with CCTV"
The PA can be used manually and overrides any automated announcement, some drivers leave this engaged to disable the auto announcement if it is annoying them ...though i love it ;D
The text in car displays match the spoken announcements (for the most part).
(Not sure that's exactly what you were asking, but it may interest someone !) ;D ;D ;D

The 73 stock system is rather primitive in comparison. There's no GPS involved, and no announcements are triggered automatically.
To set up the blinds and scrolling displays in the passenger saloons, the driver enters a code which corresponds with the destination of the train (for example Cockfosters - 01). A similar code is then entered which corresponds with where the train is starting from (for example Heathrow - 44). The driver then keys in a single digit which corresponds with the stopping pattern of the train (for example non-stop Acton-Hammersmith - which is 0 IIRC).
The destination blind will now display "COCKFOSTERS" and the saloon displays will display "This train is for COCKFOSTERS".
The 73 stock has a rather rubbish auto-announcer which has to be controlled manually despite it being an AUTO-announcer. A selection of announcements can be made, ranging from "Stand clear of the doors" to, well, other ones which rarely get used. The driver keys in a 3 digit code on the keypad to his left. The chosen announcement will then be played (for example 001 - Stand clear of the doors please).
Use of the auto announcer causes the saloon displays to cancel.

Use of the auto announcer causes the saloon displays to cancel. In most cases, yes. However there are a couple of trains where this isnt the case. Yet still there are a couple of trains where it does cancel off, but not straight away! Me thinks in time for T5 opening, they should kit the trains out with the same equipment that the refurb Ds are getting.....

Wouldn't it be better simply to upgrade the current equipment to automatically trigger, rather than refitting a new system? All it needs is a way to transmit a 3-bit code to the announcer system!

Wouldn't there have to be more announcements added though, for that to happen?

A software update would bo OK to fix a lot of the problems mentioned above, but GPS would have to be retrofitted.
If the current system ain't broke dont fix it!

92 ts is similar in many respects: a two digit code for destination: 01=West Ruislip, 46=Epping Announcements are very similar, 001 Stand Clear of the doors, 002, No Smoking etc.

Couldn't you just put some form of trackside beacon which transmits a code (say, 203 for "Next station is Oakwood") - this would be loaded into the system as if it were being typed (this is already supported, rmeember)? The PTI system could be used to supply "This Train Terminates" announcements.

im intrigued... does that mean the 73 stock has to be almost 'spoon fed'
i.e. when approaching a station, the driver has to press the button?
thanks for everyones info!! I really appreciate it!
thanks

Indeed - if the station announcements are to be triggered the relevent code must be punched in. Most drivers don't bother, hence you never hear them.
