Could be. Perhaps it was also an attempt to future-proof against traffic well and truely bottoming out? Yea, under the GLC traffic only decreased. Then Ms. Thatcher came in, gave it to LRT and then it suddenly increased. Is it me, or is it luck? I don't know WHERE to start with this one! Under the GLC's Fares Fair scheme, ridership ROSE dramatically. When this scheme was challenged and overruled, with Mrs.Thatcher's support I might add, ridership fell once more. I don't THINK (may be wrong) ridership started to rise once more until the early 90s.

oh yea, the Fares Fair scandal. It increases, Bromley starts being annoying (they're in the Green Belt; no tubes would be possible), then they get sued, in the meanwhile Mrs. Thatcher lowered the GLC's subsidy, Livingstone lowers school milk subsidies, then calling her milk snatcher, GLC loses the lawsuit, Fares Fair reversed (except the Travelcard & zones), Thatcher then creates LRT and suddenly it's profitable.. (and the first year report also suggests that (coincidentally) ridership increases), 1986TS, KX Fire, 1992TS, JLE & 1995&6TS, GLA getting created, LRT being replaced by TfL, common sense been eradicated at LU, CR, and now the current age...

Chris...Please don't take this badly.....It would take me days to untangle your post...days I don't have at my disposal....or are you being satirical? Let's get the easy bit done first. Margaret Thatcher abolished free milk to schoolchildren in about 1970 when she was Education Minister.I know this because I was there and it affected me directly. It was a nationwide decision and had nothing to do with the GLC (Education in London being then run by the ILEA). The campaign against this decision had the slogan "Margaret Thatcher Milk Snatcher" At the time,Ken Livingtone hadn't yet been elected as a junior councillor at Lambeth (in 1971) and, though no doubt he was in favour of the campaign,I don't think he played any great part in it. If anyone else would like to explain the Fares Fair business....

Fares Fair included buses, so a lack of tube in Bromley - though cited as a reason in the law case - was considered by many to be immaterial. Milk had nothing to do with it The abolition of 'fares fair' (and following price increase) resulted in a nose dive of custom. A later measure made a compromise in fares and traffic started to pick up again. Eventually, at some point in the early 90's, the tube started turning a profit. Though left wing, this covers the facts from FF: www.bilderberg.org/farefare.htmThat any money started being pumped into the system after years of stagnation is a reason up for very large debate. Ultimately the KX fire was possibly responsible for some modernisation because not being seen to do something related to safety was a non-option.

Decisions were MUCH more political. I have written on several different threads about all this. The lying to the public by politicians has been going on for years, and again, l refer to my previous comments about Marples & Beeching, the proposed closure of Marylebone and turning it into a coachpark, and the closure of Epping - Ongar. This last is quite relevant to the Bromley case, and now we read that one of the Essex C.C. politicians who was involved with the local (Essex) County Council regime to give NO support to the Ongar branch on the grounds of "cutting subsidies", (Lord Hanningfield), has now himself been imprisoned for fiddling his own personal expenses!!

Don't forget the oil companies... They say that we'll have a giant oil crisis, yet they're turning the biggest profit ever.
If only I were able to go to school with the bus; oh wait, oil, I can just.. walk there. But I can't do everything with the bus. Maybe I'll just move to London when I turn like, 18 or something?

I'm amazed at the lack of motor noise! The 1983TS had series motors and camshaft switching control with a Kiepe electric motor driven camshaft under electronic notching control, that had very smooth notching. The equipment was very quiet and without any 'chopper' buzzing and with good quality gears, the drive was indeed relatively quiet. The service brake control had 5 steps I seem to recall, not the 4 of 73TS and D78. The extra one was lower, so you could make a smoother final stop. Shame about the saloon decor scheme, a few steps on from original D78, but all in the wrong direction I thought! Quite a bit of the rest the train was poor too. All that cab space wasted in the middle of the train, narrow doors, unreliable MA's, unreliable brake valves, bogies that cracked, even the traction equipment became unreliable as it was clearly a big change from the pneumatic GEC camshafts, but a blind alley with the incoming 1992TS and beyond, so it was never really cared for with enough engineering support.

If you don't know it ran on the Jubilee Line when in service. Chalk Farm is on the Northern Line so unless your taking latitudes here I'm still confused as to your comment in this thread.

I was responding to the video about what deep level station it was in the end.... so let's change it. The northernmost Jubilee station I have ever been is Baker Street. Happy now? I know about the existence about the 83ts. Although I hate the moquette, I love the warm colours, too bad it got withdrawn too early...
