Loop failure, which caused a number of trains to go into non communicating mode.

It's been a bad week for the Jubilee. After the apparent initial success with the final stage of TBTC, we have had regular "signal failures", "severe delays" and part-closures in the last few days, with the consequent "minor delays" (in reality gaps of 15 minutes or more) rumbling on for much of each day. This is becoming reminiscent of the months following the original JLE opening, except that the numbers of affected customers are now vastly greater. Even more worrying is the suggestion of possible design faults. Much more of this and TfL better come up with credible evidence that they have the problems in hand and a fix identified.

That hasn't been my experience over the last couple of weeks... Not to say failures haven't happened but when travelling in evening peak and outside of the peaks, I've had only positive experiences. Guess we shall have to see what Diana has to say

The performance was steadily improving, obviously we have had a few failures such as VCC4 halting, the loop failure at Swiss Cottage on Friday plus we get intermittent problem with Intersigs halting and axle counter blocks going disturbed. The number of human error related faults (to be expected when a new system is introduced) is gradually diminishing, which means the focus is now on hardware and software faults.
The only previous example of cutting over from tripcock to computer controlled ATP on the Underground is the Central Line and I gather that was far from smooth.

Dan

[Guess we shall have to see what Diana has to say You may have your wish ....... Been just using the DLR for some days, but this morning, Thursday, had to go into central London (Camden). So DLR at 8.15 to Canning Town, down the escalator to find a huge crowd on the platform. In comes a train which is so packed I don't think anyone managed to get in it at all. Sign says next trains are this one, 6 minutes and 12 minutes. I make that doing 10 trains an hour. What was that about 25 or 30 trains an hour with the new signals? Then the sign changes in front of all these people, to say Jubilee Line Good Service!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So go other way to West Ham and get the District line, which is usually the most reliable alternative, because I know that the DLR to Bank can get stopped when there are Jubilee problems and then you are really stranded. Because I get into the very front carriage next to the drivers door we can hear an announcement from the centre to the drivers, which says that the Jubilee Line is severe delays because of a signal at Wembley. Now if that has gone all the way to trains at Canning Town it must have happened a long time ago. So the Good Service message is, as so often, complete Lies (word I am told is for children only but is appropriate). By they way, when I got to Monument and the Northern Line, there was a PA that the Central Line was now stopped both ways at Bank because of too many people. So my thoughts were right. By the way, on the District Line only half the trains were going there as well, because the Hammersmith line was stopped - well it was delayed or severe delays or all stopped, we heard different messages at every station. One day I am going to go into London for morning meeting and it will all work. It has been a while since that happened.

Jubliee failure today was a non TBTC issue - points failure around Neasden somewhere.

Please forgive my ignorance but what are "Intersigs". I see this word appear from time to time and I've no idea what it means.

The Intersig is the interlocking part of SelTrac S40, basically a box of electronics in the Signalling Equipment Room (SER).

Some slight failiures today, on unit 96097 there was a delayed door opening at Willesden Green, followed by and underrun at Finchley Road and in the process delaying the PTI by about two minutes at 15.00 hrs. Would appear some issues still need ironing out.

Its crazy that 8 months on since TBTC/ATO started there is still some problems, you would think all the problems would be sorted out my now? Well, at least it was a underun not an overrun i suppose! Out of interest what is the PTI?

Out of interest what is the PTI? Perhaps there is another meaning but the two I am aware of are Passenger Train Interface (i.e. the platform edge) and Positive Train Identification (a means of determining the position of a train on the track)

The one I was thinking of was Platform Train Interface, Im pretty sure thats basically the whole stopping on the mark and the opening and closing of the doors process.
Oh and I forgot to mention, dodgy announcements on 097 too, when the doors would open the DVA would first say "The next station is (station name) This station is (station name)This train terminates at Stratford."

Out of interest what is the PTI? There is a large team of people trying to iron out all these little teething problems. New software is being issued on a weekly basis to improve things and reliability is clearly getting better. We are still getting failures based on user unfamiliarity with the system as well, which will only reduce with time. Regards, Dan

From a world where we also do large projects, I do say if there is a "large team" still doing work, obviously there are still large problems to be overcome, otherwise what are they doing? If new software releases every week (which in IT world is a dreadful sign after "go live") then that shows all the years of testing were never done completely. How can users still be unfamiliar after 8 months? Reliability should have GOT better long before now. I was away recently, but returned to Heathrow last Thursday, and actually managed to get right home, Piccadilly, Jubilee and DLR lines, without a problem. It has been a while since that happened for me on this particular journey, so things are getting better you think. But next day, last Friday, had to go for afternoon to office in Notting Hill Gate, so DLR to Canning Town at lunchtime, but Jubilee train to Stratford for Central Line was just sat there, driver announced that there was a stoppage ahead of several trains already, who knows when we will start again, fortunately a train going the other direction came along so I can take that. When I came back at rush hour from Waterloo hoped it would be all cleared, but there was a 10 minute gap after our train so good thing to get in it I thought, because that next one would obviously be too squashed to fit in. But our train went slow, 2 minutes wait at each station, then finally announced it was now to be ended at North Greenwich and everyone out please. Still a long time until that next train, obviously full up, was to arrive. I have been stuck like this before, have learned my lesson, so as we were now at the Canada Water station I just went over to Shadwell and DLR from there. I didn't look to see if Good Service messages were showing, but they probably were.

@ Jardine PTI is either Positive Train Identification or Platform/Train Interface in TubeSpeak

The one I was thinking of was Platform Train Interface, Im pretty sure thats basically the whole stopping on the mark and the opening and closing of the doors process. But that is CSDE ! Of course the trains didn't actually stop 'on the mark' originally when the stop mark was the diamond, 6 or 8 car sign in the four foot. When I installed the original CSDE kit on the H&C the sighting distance through the cab window to the mark taking the downward angle into account was specified as 1.03M. AFAIK on the JLE as on the Picc and presumably elsewhere now, where the mark is at the junction of the chevrons and green line at cab height the train does stop pretty much 'on the mark'! SE13 edit to alter the codes to work

CSDE (Correct Side Door Enable) is just to ensure the train is stopped in the correct place (the Zone) and the doors are as it says on the tin, enabled to open on the correct side only using the console buttons. I know that the Central and presumably the Jubilee and Victoria now too have it as part of the PAC (Platform Automatic Communicator), which I think is the same type of gubbins, but also has train PTI (as in positive data). Platform Train Interface is the area between the platform and train including the gap and monitoring of the the area - Simples! Edited to allow the codes to work correctly.
