Since when have UNDMs had the space for compressors?
Besides, I didn't know the 49TS build included trailers...

They were not the vane type that gave so much trouble CCL4's I think they were called and were originally intended for Trolleybus'es

That's right, they had a horrible tendency to seize up,hence why these units were amongst the first to get scrapped.

The KLL4's (or was it 7? ) were eventually replaced by a pump similar to those on 59 stocks which were of a reciprocating type, as these were more robust and less prone to breaking down. Although the KLL4's were a good compressor in theory, they were too refined for Underground service and couldnt cope with the tunnel dust and vibrations that Underground trains have to deal with.

These compressors were one of the reasons the Northern earned the tag "Misery Line",during the AUEW strike in the late 60's,because these compressors failed so often there was soon a long list of units awaiting compressor changes and the staff who changed them were members of AUEW.
