Personally I think there is a difference between trains, particularly in the braking. Since we are now driving in ATO it is a lot harder to spot the differences.
There are certain trains that the saloon doors close slower than others.
These are 2 of the differences between trains that I can think of immediately.

i think i went on 96035 last year and it felt like it was struggling to keep up speed however the braking was ok.

All trains, however outwardly the same they appear, have their own characteristics. I can give several examples of particular units [Central] that appear to be more adept at being annoying to their masters than their brothers. I think it depends on who fixes the faults.

Does anybody find that there is that one train that everyone in a depot hopes never to have to operate?

Oh yes! I have a little notebook of problem units. They're like naughty school children... some have gold stars next to them!

Maybe, I don't know much about the mechanics of a train but today i was on the front carriage of a 96ts in one of the newer carriages. The motor sounds sounded more louder than most other 96ts i've been on, i loved the sound of the AC motors and the doors seemed to open sharper and at a faster speed than other 96ts trains i've been on.
