Hello all, Is it true that when under heat, the roofs of C Stocks expand? I was on an H&C in the bay at Barking today in the front (West End) DM of a C stock, I had the entire car to myself and I know for a fact that no body else was on board as I could see right though the entire 6 cars of the Train. I could hear little 'creeks' and 'cracks' from the above of the Train, all of a sudden there was a massive BANG! from the top of the Train, like something had just fell out of the sky and hit it! (Must admit, it did frighten the absolute living daylights out of me as I was in a little day-dream at the time of it happening... ;D) Because there was nobody on board, I knew the bang couldn't of been caused by Human activity. Can anybody tell me if this was the roof expanding or not? And why the roof expands/needs to in hot situations? Much appreciated, Christopher.

Indeed they do, and that is almost certainly what happened . It is nothing more or less than the facts of physics that metal, when heated, expands. Thus, when the train has been stationary for a short while, with the sun beating down on the roof, it will expand. Once the train moves, the air movement will cool it down, and it will contract again - until the next time it sits in the blazing sun ;D ;D

Anything made of metal will of course creek, grind and occasionally bang in hot weather, especially in direct sunlight.
There is no design spec that I am aware of to make the roof expand on this stock or any other.
Maybe something did "fall out of the sky" like an over-heated pigeon or, as you were out east, maybe a brick or large rock.

Does make you jump until you're used to it. ;D C stocks weren't designed to do lots of things but they do them anyway. ;D Just seems to be one of those quirks of our trains. Ah, you mentioned the east end!! Must have been a fire extinguisher then!! ;D

I wish i'd seen your face ;D The expanding roof is one of the things I most love about C stocks, especially customers reactions! ;D ;D

Used to happen on occasion with earlier stocks too. On one occasion I remember being at Dagenham east when there was a crash of glass. Me and my mate investigated and found a fanlight had fallen out! (R stock)

The 62 stock used to do this, usually about 15 minutes after you left the tunnel.

Up to yesterday this had just been a joke about scaring the punters. Now it all looks very different. If I was a tourist on a C stock and the roof expanded today, what would I think (or do)? Unless something is done to reassure ALL the punters you could imagine panic at stations, alarm handles being triggered and even worse. Only locals know 'they all do that '

Apart from the 'peaks', the vast majority of passengers today were tourist's. They don't seem at all fazed by the bombs, so I reckon they'll manage with the odd expanding roof.
