If the service went even slightly up the wall, you'd have one hell of a time getting back to it until the start of traffic the next day...

The Piccadilly Line to Heathrow serves the tourist areas of London. It is also a commuter service for five large West London suburbs. Tourists and commuters like the tube because it's cheap. It makes sense to have a fast service some of the way to get the tourists and commuters between where they want to go.
The District Line past Hammersmith serves one small inner suburb and half-arsedly serves Ealing and Richmond, and takes commuters in to the City. People from Heathrow who want to go to the City are business travellers. They don't need to take the tube because their company will pay for a Heathrow Express ticket or a cab which is a much nicer option. So why bother with a fast District Line to Heathrow?
It would take almost an hour from Acton Town to get to Heathrow via Uxbridge. People would go to Heathrow on the quickest route i.e. the current one and change terminals via the many transfer options available once in the airport itself.
It's a shame Crossrail to Richmond didn't happen, sending the District Line to Rayners/Uxbridge and abandoning the Ealing/Richmond branches would have given the Piccadilly a full service to the airport, is that 20+tph in the peaks or am I including Northfields reversers in that?

Do people still commute from Hatton Cross? When designed the building had a car park on the roof but it was never used because of concerns. I have to say that even it had been used as intended it would have been too small.

I have to say that even it had been used as intended it would have been too small. Why would they, it's an industrial area not a residential one? Hounslow West is where the commuters park. Of course there are never enough car parks, not enough public transport and far too much traffic on the capital's roads. The answer to many problems including faster more efficient public transportation is to ban cars and other non essential vehicles from the capital 24/7 but I doubt it will ever happen.

HC had a 'Kiss and Drop' layby installed from new that was intended to cater for commuters being dropped-off. My query was intended to encompass those from Feltham and Bedfont and perhaps further afield?

Bus services from the estates surrounding Bedfont, Hatton, Hanworth and Feltham (H25/H26) terminate at Hatton Cross.

Where was the ramp up to the roof? I love random stuff like that about stations, so obvious when you look on the roof via google maps as well.

Hatton Cross's ramp was supposed to be at the south-western end, i.e. airport side. From new there was a perimeter round the concrete roof.
Here's another random fact: after Hounslow West re-opened/relocated, the old waiting shelter on what was P1 remained in situ for many years, and still had a sign on it mentioning about trains stopping at Turnham Green! Also, at about the same level as the old tracks/buffers was the Ladies and Gents loos, which were under the main building. They remained in use and were accessible by stairs down, which I think are still there.

^^Who'd want to get the tube from Heathrow to C.London via Uxbridge? The suggestion would benefit people wishing to get to Heathrow from points between North Ealing and Uxbridge. Less need to change from one branch to another at Acton Town would make the station a little less of a madhouse. People working at or close to Heathrow would make good use of the Uxbridge to Heathrow service. Intermediate stations between Uxbridge and Heathrow would generate additional revenue from potential passengers currently reluctant to make the long journey to either Heathrow or Uxbridge to get on the tube.

Doing the commute along the route you describe fairly regularly, there is absolutely no need for a tube line in the area. Demand could be more than met were it ever to increase by higher frequencies on the existing bus routes in the area. With Oyster PAYG the increased convenience of Heathrow Connect and FGW local services from West Drayton is a suitable alternative to the Tube in to zone 1 in that area.

The Pic looping back on itself had some support in LB Hillingdon a while ago; probably fizzled out now though. Its a pity that the Vine Street branch was closed; the two XR trains terminating at West Drayton could have been projected over it.
