Due to a faulty train this morning at London Bridge, our driver attempted to take our train back to Southwark: the poor soul had to walk through the train with everyone gazing bemusedly at him. Sadly, one of the signals wouldn't let him, so he had to trudge back after a while, by which time the faulty train had moved, so we were able to carry on in the normal direction!
I found it interesting as a rail geek, but I can't imagine my fellow passengers were that impressed. I'm just grateful that the new signalling (theoretially) allows this, rather than having to detrain or hang around in the tunnel...

SelTrac doesn't have bi-directional enabled on the Jubilee AIUI.

Hey, that's what the driver told us, and the assumption on which the line controllers were acting on, so maybe they've been misinformed! We were certainly travelling backwards for a while before we came up against the troublesome signal...

A Wrong Direction Movement is fully possible under conventional signalling. In the old days a Person In Charge was required (which would normally be the nearest Station Supervisor) who would walk to the train and issue a form to the Train Operator. Nowadays the procedure can be carried out directly over secure radio, removing the need for the person in charge and the form, but this can't be done if points are involved. I'm not totally familiar with the wrong direction arrangements on the Jubilee, however I suspect the procedure is similar to the second of the two methods described above.

I should probably clarify that we DID move in the wrong direction for at least 5 mins, even though we didn't make it back to Southwark, so did the driver move in the wrong direction until a signal stopped him because it wasn't possible? If that's really the case, I would suggest that Jubilee line controllers and drivers need to be let in on the secret.

Interesting, I thought the JLE had been built with bidrectional signalling at stations on all roads so I would've thought WDMs to be more easily achieved than elsewhere. Perhaps I was misinformed but that was some 9 years ago.

Is there not a 'restricted manual' mode or whatever its equivalent? This would allow any movement in any direction? Maybe the driver came across a set of points or a fixed red signal and could not safely proceed?

There is indeed an RM mode on the trains, but I doubt it would be allowed usage in such a manner!

The driver said that the signal needed to be reset, or something: the PA the other end wasn't very good. But he did say that the controllers instructed him to reverse the train until this problem with the signal occured, by which time the faulty train at London Bridge had cleared the platform, so we could go forward as normal.

Been told that a move in the wrong direction is not possible under TBTC.... It isn't possible as a signalled move but it is allowed under procedure as on other lines.
