Are trains ever driven ECS on the main line using the shunting cabinet?

Never seen it happen. I suppose in theory they could be in an emergency for a short distance. They are regularly driven this way in the depots though.

Iam not exactly sure, but you cant get normal line speed when driving from a shunting control cabinet can you? The narest i have seen to this is an A stock being driven from the non OPO cab, that has white ends! Where was my camera?! ;D

you cant get normal line speed when driving from a shunting control cabinet can you? You only get "Shunt" and "Series" in a shunting control cabinet so any mainline move would be slow and boring and probably wouldn't do the control gear and motors much good..

Yeah i was aware of that, as i have used one when i did the 73ts stock course, however i wasnt sure if it was like driving the train in 'slow speed'

Are trains ever driven ECS on the main line using the shunting cabinet? Back in the days of uncoupling at Watford (LMSR) there was a plan for the uncoupled stock to run with the UNDM leading back to Croxley Green sheds. Staff complained about the length of time they had to drive from the shunting cabinet and so the 38S on the Bakerloo were turned to be the wrong way around. Met Apprentice, try to beat the white A stock cab with a pic of the half-red 72TS middle DM's ;D

It is not a scheduled manovere on any line. The only reason I can think of for moving a train with the shunting cabinet on the main line is following a derailment. Even then it would usually be towed by a Battery Locomotive. The shunting controls are also very small compared to those in a normal cab, especially the deadman which is a small button. And as already said, speed would be an issue. I wouldn't fancy it.

I found a photo but I can't get it to display, so here's the link: world.nycsubway.org/perl/show?12425Any idea what's going on? I don't remember ever seeing 95 stock at South Ealing.

If you have a quick look at my site at www.trainweb.org/districtdave/html/on_the_test_track.html you'll see there's a brief explanation as to the use of the test track. Looking at the age of the photo to which you link, I would assume that it was taking when the 95TS were being tested, and that's where it'd be done! Hope that helps?

The photo was taken in April 1997 when the 1995 tube stock was on the test track. The 3 car unit is being driven from the UNDM car.
