I have just been having a look at Chris Cobley's website & photos (I'm very impressed Chris! ) In one set of photos Chris has shots of a 1972 mkI unit in Northfields Depot being rebuilt with the intention of using it as a track recording train (is this to replace the 60TS Craven's unit)??! As the 72TS was refurbished some years ago, I was under the impression that all such stock would either have undergone full refurbishment, been scrapped or in one DM example, made its way unrefurbished into the LT museum stock (currently I understand at the Action depot). Are there any other nuggets of unrefurbished or unused stock stored in 'secret locations' (unused tunnels - Aldwych branch etc. etc.) As a further aside, are the interior funishings of at least one example the current 78 District Line stock to be stored so that a pre-refurbished example could be reconstructed should the LU museum see an example worthy for keeping for posterity... only a thought!

Yes. The 1960TS is old, and is no longer reliable enough to fulfill the extremely busy schedule placed upon it. However, they are not so old as to prevent them from running at all, which is why the TRC is to be donated/sold/flogged to CHTL after the track recording kit is removed from it. Once CHTL has it, they can do what they wish with it. As the 72TS was refurbished some years ago, I was under the impression that all such stock would either have undergone full refurbishment, been scrapped or in one DM example, made its way unrefurbished into the LT museum stock (currently I understand at the Action depot). The train being refurbished is indeed a 1972mkI unit, of which several were retained after the remainder were chucked at Shoeburyness. One of them is stored at Aldwych and used for siege training. Are there any other nuggets of unrefurbished or unused stock stored in 'secret locations' (unused tunnels - Aldwych branch etc. etc.) I already mentioned Aldwych. Other than the rotting 1983TS, I can't think of any boltholes for unrefurbished rolling stock to hide in. As a further aside, are the interior funishings of at least one example the current 78 District Line stock to be stored so that a pre-refurbished example could be reconstructed should the LU museum see an example worthy for keeping for posterity... only a thought! I would be surprised if such forethought was taken.

Once CHTL has it, they can do what they wish with it. The cravens unit is old, but does the job ok at the moment. The problem is, that in a few years it will be a tad life expired and will not have room for more new kit that they want to use to Track Record with, even now! When the new unit is finally done, it will run alongside the cravens until all faults and niggles have been worked out of it, then the cravens unit will go elsewhere, not neccesarily to CHT, but my guess would be that that would be the case. The train being refurbished is indeed a 1972mkI unit, of which several were retained after the remainder were chucked at Shoeburyness. One of them is stored at Aldwych and used for siege training. And filming! I already mentioned Aldwych. Other than the rotting 1983TS, I can't think of any boltholes for unrefurbished rolling stock to hide in. TMU at Acton has all sorts of bits and bobs lying around, inside and out, along with various depots all over the combine. Most of it is 62 or 72 mkI stuff! Thanks for the compliment about the pictures, hope you liked them!
