Right,
Once i am out of uni i am going to apply for a station assistant job after time super then go for GNER.
But I know we get free travel.
But if were a memeber of staff and we know a driver can we pop in for a cab ride on the way to work.
Do we eventually get to see things liek Aldwych stuff like that.
I know we have a job to do but you know every now and again sort of thing/

You get free travel on TfL services (and a discount on the Thames Riverboat). We don't get any sort of discount on the mainline services these days.
If you are travelling to/from work in uniform, you could hang around the front to see if you were invited in to the cab, but it is the drivers decision... There's no rule saying staff must be allowed to travel in the cab (in fact quite the opposite!)
I very much doubt you'd ever get to see Aldwych unless you specifically requested to, and even then you'd be lucky!
Hope that answers your questions and hasn't put you off too much!

Yes us "mature" staff still get the Priv Rate. We get a season ticket for use everyday, plus a card which can be used to purchase other tickets with 75% off. Certain managerial grades also get a free ticket or two (some get first class as well) to anywhere on the NR network. Not sure if that is being phased out under the re-organisaion or not though. I hope not Newer staff can still apply for the 75% off season ticket. It's not quite as simple though. Basically you have to but a full-price season, then apply to the company to be refunded the 75%. This of course then gets taxed. Not great but better than what was being offered until recently.

There's no point getting first class on Southern or SET. The same seats and legroom, but you do get use of an antimacassar. I bet those people who pay 50% extra for first class feel robbed. I certainly would!!

I certainly would!! Ah yes, but the drivers only say 'Good morning' or 'Good Evening' to First Class season ticket holders as they file past the cab window. And if you're railstaff, I might even smile...

I certainly would!! Ah, well that depends on the stock. SET have otherwise identical Electrostar units with 2+2 or 3+2 seating in second class (why?) but always 2+2 in first. Often an eight car train is one unit of each, so if the first carriage yu come to is the nasty 3+2 type it's always worth walking further up to see if you can find the better kind! And the refurbished SET Networkers have kept their 3+2 seating, except in the newly added first class areas which are 2+2. Nicest first class seats are in the slammers: six well padded armchairs per compartment - and curtains!

James, it's a nice idea to have a plan but don't feel you have to stick to it. You may well change your mind, you never know what may crop up! I always wanted to work on the railways but I got a great opportunity in another area.
As for the 75% off, bear in mind that's 75% off the full 'Open' fare, for example York to London return would be approx £33 (From memory, it's about £130-135 for a SOR). You can get any train for that though. But with my Young Persons railcard I can do York to London for £33 off-peak. And you would get no discount off advance purchase tickets (£19 return for York to London).
Obviously it varies from route to route and when you're too old (and too young!) to have a railcard then the difference is significant.

I used to have one through my Dad before I joined, but as i was earning more than £6k, I had to give it up. The free travel in London doesnt make up for it! Having said that my YP pass is rather good. As for cab rides, quite a few drivers like a bit of company in the front, however you should only be in the cab in the course of your operational duties. Those out there who have a cab pass, still do not have an automatice right to be in the cab, it is still down to the driver, and if he wants someone with them. Uniform is part of the job, you get tonnes of it when you first join, the day you take you huge cardboard boxes home, sods law say it will tip down with rain, well at least it did with me! As for the 75% off, bear in mind that's 75% off the full 'Open' fare, for example York to London return would be approx £33 (From memory, it's about £130-135 for a SOR). Obviously, common sense tells you that, but on a turn up and go basis, the Priv Ticket is worthwhile, as is any other railcard.
