Hi,
Can anyone help the surface stock detector on the EB at Barons Court does it still have mercury in the tubes or is it now just a circuit which is broken and puts the signals to danger. Now we are in the world where people become concerned following H&S.

You're correct in saying the tubes no longer have mercury in them.

You're correct in saying the tubes no longer have mercury in them. Right so how do they work now? Paul

I read somewhere that they are silvered glass, like a thermos - (or a mirror - given the recent tribulations on the Jubilee line seem to have lasted nearly seven years, perhaps somebody smashed the ones at Finchley Road a while ago!)

I was told if they're broken it breaks an electric circuit which leads me to believe they have some sort of fuse wire in them... I'll try find out exactly...

Another day it might well have taken 20mins. But it all seems to depend on what you choose as the keyword, how many posts you select AND how many days - then it times out and you have to start again!!!

Exactly - as you have found from that link, most of the primary references are to the mercury retardation controllers built into each car and linked to the braking system on that car. Nothing at all to do with the tubes at Baron's court. You've proved my point as to why I so dislike the Proboards 'search' facility - and why the precise choice of keyword makes such a difference to the search .

It should be possible to do a search for 'mercury NOT:retardation' or something similar to that.

Kentucky Tony's signature really does not help as that has "mercury" in it
