Hi guys,
Coming back from uni today and we were thundering out of Wembley Park. As we pass Neasden depot, I knew the points were coming up and it felt like we were going to derail, it's that bumpy!! Are these points due for replacement? Or is it just a case of slow speed over them???

Those points have a bad record for ride quality. They were involved in a broken rail incident earlier this week.
They should be replaced, but will they....

They should be replaced, but will they.... Well, a couple of sets may be removed... The ride over such a series of crossovers will always be a bit hair-raising. There are a fair number of sets there, and getting a smooth ride over all of them would be a tough job.

Why not use swing-nose points? They would most certainly give a very smooth ride!
Ignore my ramble about spring-toggle points, I'm being a silly boy!

Oh yes! I can just see the currency signs lighting up when the order for (I could probably tell you an exact number[1]) lets say 300 sets of swingnose points are ordered.
Mr. Pointmaker GmbH (probably) would be laughing all the way to the bank.
[1] all the way across the entire Met.

I think that, in the short-term at least, any connection to a certain line being upgraded, that causes problems and therefore a headache to the upgraders, in terms of re-signalling, will be solved quickly and efficiently by being... removed from the equation by being... removed.
The lines "they are of similar design to Camden" and "they are of no economical use" and "cannot be easily rectified in the short-term" have all been used for the other Met/Jub connections that have been lost of recent times. And after they have gone, the Jubilee upgrade has forged ahead.
Give it a year or two and the only points giving the rough ride at Neasden will be the set linking the depot to the southbound Met. A total of one (they won't be swing-nosed) solitary set of points.

A total of one (they won't be swing-nosed) solitary set of points. My recollection of points on the Met is that many are well past their sell by date. ISTR that a set at Finchley Road was robbed to provide essential spare parts for HotH, they were six foots as I recall. There were issues with those at Wembley Park, more six foots with second motors to throw the back of the turnout switches. I recall we installed an electronic monitoring system to measure and record the stresses exerted at key parts of the turnout, it having suffered numerous failures over the years. At Neasden we had issues with the clamplock sets near the level crossing 25 and 26 IIRC. Yep split the Jube from the Met completely and cut down the maintenance. The Met and Jube from Finchley Road to Preston Road was one of the worst areas I worked on for signal maintenance. It was very poorly maintained by Met signals and when the Picc took over the maintenance we had to do a lot of remedial work to bring it up to a reasonable standard. Allegedly SSL were saving their pennies rather than spending them where they were needed.

As far as I know, the whole Neasden area will have new points in the next couple of years. You can't detach the Jub from the Met - how would they get the significant chunk of the trains stabled there into service? There is nowhere else for them to be parked. All the design work for TBTC includes the need for the points - its already got the axle counters and loop system installed, so can't see them removing them - it would cost even more to change it again surely?

You can't detach the Jub from the Met - how would they get the significant chunk of the trains stabled there into service? Wembley Park - which has all the kit installed already. That means you only need to worry about interfacing with one site, not two. Reduces both costs and delays to the project. All the design work for TBTC includes the need for the points - its already got the axle counters and loop system installed, so can't see them removing them - it would cost even more to change it again surely? I could get someone to "design" a conservatory on the back of my house, but if at a later date I ran out of money I may not build it. Finchley Road is the classic example of where a problem was found with "splitting" the site to be able to be operated by both Neasden and Baker Street SCCs for either the Jubilee or Met respectively. Remove the connections, remove the interface problem.

Its already built though - its being used for trial ops in a couple of weeks. Also, how will they manage to improve the ramp up to 30 tph for the peak if restricted to Wembley exit only? I think the Neasden south end will be used more when the new timetable comes in (whenever that will be - just before the Olympics I expect.)
