I'm trying to write descriptions of my photos from the meet that relate to railways (for the Railfan Europe picture gallery ( www.railfaneurope.net/pix/gb/pix.html) but I can't remember the purpose of the white-on-black diamond in the four-foot - see sucs.swan.ac.uk/~cmckenna/photos/dd_forum/August-2005-meet/07-track_diamond.jpg for the picture. For reference this is very near the west end of the westbound platform 4 at Earl's Court. I've had a browse through what I think are the relevant sections of Dave's main site (inlcuding all the district line locations) and Tube Prune's site but haven't been able to find anything about it. Chris That's the stopping mark. It's where the front of the train should be stopped as to ensure the entire train is in the platform and aligned with the monitors.

To be pedantic and a know sod-all. That is an ALL TRAINS stopping mark. In the olden times of my youth stopping marks were numbers on enamel plate in the same position. The numbers corresponded with the number of cars in the train you were driving. 4, 6, 8..
On SSL lines the numbers were mounted on the track as shown though not always left of the negative rail. In tube tunnels they were mounted on tunnel segment rings. With shorter train markers on the concrete of the pit edge.

The numbers corresponded with the number of cars in the train you were driving. 4, 6, 8.. On the nort side of the circle, number plates are still used, instead of diamonds. 6 for six car C stock, and 8 for eight car A stock, where trains stop in different places.

And in some places, eg High St Ken, they have the plates with 'C' or 'D' on them - else it could be awkward to use numbers as they are both 6 cars ;D

The ones at HSK (Bay Plats) still have the stopping mark for the 'R' Stock by the looks of things, IIRC the diamonds on the track have C/R on them!
IIRC there's one at Whitechapel too.

So if they stand for C stock reverser, why do bay roads have them when surely everything has to reverse there anyway?

So if they stand for C stock reverser, why do bay roads have them when surely everything has to reverse there anyway? So as to allign the monitors at the rear with the cab, C stock trains being shorter, if they pulled up to the diamond, the cab would be miles away from the monitors.

As I discovered when I went into platform 4 at High Street with a C stock, and thought I was on a D stock, so went right to the end of the platform on the D stock mark... I thought someone had nicked half my train! Luckily it's cat B (I could see the entire train by leaning out of the cab door) so didn't cause any probs!
