I was asked for my "Ticket or Oyster" once. I had touched in at Bank and was travelling between Ruislip Manor and Eastcote back towards the city. This was in the days of the flat two hour rule. The Inspector looked a little quizzically at her display, but then moved swiftly onto the group of scallies further down the car.

There have been many days when I have travelled around without once being manually inspected.

Interesting. I've never had a ticket inspection in my life. Not on the tube anyway... I got checked by a PSA on the DLR, then a RCI on the DLR as well.

I'd never been checked ever either - until tonight, when everyone got checked at the Chesham gates.

Not been checked on London Overground yet, but I did once this year on Southern, never on the tube yet.

I was checked on LO a couple of weeks ago. Cute little black lady with such a sweet smile. Brightened up the journey somewhat.

I've only once been probed about my ticket. It was in 1978 when I was cautioned by an inspector in a smart peaked cap for smoking whilst travelling on a child's fare.
I've had my fishing licence checked more regularly and even that's not often either.
Shame I can't fish from a train.

Surprisingly, the legal age restriction pertaining to tobacco products relates only to the purchase of said products. There is no age restriction on actual use of the products. Perhaps even police officers themselves realize there is absolutely no offence being committed if they happen to see a 12-year walking down the street smoking a cigarette. The child is breaking no law.

I thought that was only regarding the recent age change? As in; one can still legally smoke at 16, but one has to be 18 to legally purchase. I know of (state) schools who police and will discipline underage students for smoking at the weekend (i.e. outside of school hours and school uniform) - I can't imagine how this would have any foundation if there wasn't in law. I'm not disputing what you say, more curious as I'm sure I remember discussion about this strange quirk when the age change was introduced not too long ago...

I believe it is an offence to sell cigarettes to an under-16,to buy them on their behalf,or for the under-16 to attempt to buy,or induce someone else to buy cigarettes,or for anyone to give cigarettes to an under-16. Unless your under-16 grows their own,if they are seen smoking an offence must have been committed by someone?

I was given the alternative (as was my mate) of putting out the cigarette and moving to a non-smoking carriage or paying an adult fare. As far as the inspector was concerned, if I was smoking, I was an adult - end of. Thing is, in those days 13 year old kids didn't argue readily with authority. Shame the same can't be said today.

Yet it is legal to serve alcohol to a child of five. (Provided it is not in a public place) "It is illegal to give an alcoholic drink to a child under five except under medical supervision in an emergency" "It is against the law.........for anyone to buy alcohol for someone under 18 to consume in a pub or a public place" webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Yourchildshealthandsafety/WorriedAbout/DG_10026210

Same thing still happens on our buses. If a driver sees a kid (in school uniform OR not) smoking at the stop, they get charged full fare and if they refuse they just don't travel........

"It is illegal to give an alcoholic drink to a child under five except under medical supervision in an emergency" I'm struggling to think of a medical emergency where anyone would require an alcoholic drink.

The passengers had correct tickets, read up and refresh your memory Sorry you contradicted me, Charlie. I live in that area. There were some who had season tickets but presented the fakes anyway (which is what you were thinking of...) but others who normally bought daily tickets refused to buy them that day and just presented the fakes - and were allowed to travel. This was a political decision from the very top, not one made by the ticket collectors. It was very shortly afterwards that Alison Forster was "promoted sideways" to allow a new MD to come in and sort out her mess *. So now YOU have all the facts . *This was shortly after her interview on west-country TV where, when asked whether the extra trains she said they were getting included those she'd already announced two months previously replied "How am I supposed to know - I don't concern myself with that sort of thing"
