I wish the driver had operation of the doors when stopping instead of the passengers/auto door close as my poor Mum nearly got left off a train at Canada Water last night as the door shut in her face as a group of passengers took too long to walk on.
Luckily another passenger opened the door for her, but I think you're going to get some people on that line expecting driver operated door control as on the tube.

Trust me, the hold at Canada Water can be long, and you just feel the cool air melting away as the doors remain open. This is bog standard mainline operation on most modern trains. I for one don't understand why tubes don't employ this operation on outside sections.

It always amazes me how passengers take so long to get on and off trains, as though they're on a Sunday afternoon stroll. There are some who refuse to leave their seat until the train has actually stopped, and then abuse boarding passengers for not waiting for them to get off first.

Yes, they should berng back passenger door operation on the outer sections of tube lines in Winter. Do the S stock have this facility?

I think so. I went to a wedding in Rugby/Northampton last night. The Air-con of the 350s was great although I hate them! The problem was that the air-con wasn't that effective because the doors were open too long and the cold air escaped. The air con took 5 mins to kick in.
I fear for the S stock with much shorter stops! Will the trains ever be cool?

I also find this on parts of the NR network where the guard operates the doors from the passenger saloon rather than the cab. They open a set of doors - and then keep them open nomatter how long the train is at the platform. In the summer this results in the cool air leaking away - in the winter it means a constant gust of freezing cold air. I wish they'd either go back to operating the doors from the rear cab or SHUT THE WRETCHED DOORS UNTIL IT'S TIME TO MOVE OFF!

I for one don't understand why tubes don't employ this operation on outside sections. This mode of operation was used on the Central, District and Jubilee lines (the 95 stock on the Northern Line has never been used in passenger mode). It caused more problems than it solved, with dwell times being longer and people being left behind because they didn't know they had to press the button. There were also problems on the 92 stock with people becoming caught in the doors when the close buttons were carelessly or maliciously used.

Can you image the sound of numerous doors on S Stock all closing at un-co-ordinated times at termini as passengers arrive on the platform and use the PDC, and the constant sounding of the open/close chimes?

Perhaps you would like to write a letter to my Managing director, telling him you dont like the Guards working from within the train compartment and to operate from the rear cab instead, maybe offer him an alternative method of working. You see the Guards can only operate to the method instructed to them by the powers that be, should we deviate from that point we find ourselves with either a poor performance or disciplinary record. The Guards grade is the grade that is the most monitored within our company, we have independent assessors, Transport for London and London Overground inspectors as well as our own Management team watching every move a Guard makes.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I'm aware that this instruction comes down from on high - I just happen to think it causes the sort of problems I describe above. I:E; it obviates the airconditioning in the summer and the heating in the winter. For what it's worth, the whole culture of spying on staff (which seems to have developed over the last 30 years) is something I find utterly obnoxious.
