Highbury & Islington (LO station) looks amazing, but cannot help wondering why a little platform renumbering could not have been carried out at H & I. It seems a little odd Platform 2 and Platform 7 sharing the same island platform, with Platforms 3-6 a considerable distance away. The next station west, Caledonian Road & Barnsbury has been converted to an island platform. Was this something to do with track alignment or was there another reason for the change? Eagerly awaiting the very first passenger train from H&I via Dalston Junction to Surrey Quays

Indeed, I have noticed the odd arrangements at Cally Rd & B, most odd that the platform with the only access, is disused now, and one has to negotiate a lift or the stairs. Not sure why this was done, since the original westbound platform at Highbury is still in use, or will be when they finish the works...

Eagerly awaiting the very first passenger train from H&I via Dalston Junction to Surrey Quays Though H&I is clean, tidy and functional, it is evidence of the disjointed planing that has plagued the Overground revolution. The platform numbering dates from the early days of the ELL modernisation and the desire to run to H&I so the lines terminus would be numbered in the next available platform numbers. These being 7 & 8 and no thought was given to the numbering, as shown by the numbering of the island platform at Cale Rd as 2 & 3 and no evidence of platform 1 which was to have graced the Up NL Relief, evidence of a little cost cutting as the site is obstructed by a lift shaft and the station access. As all the stations between Camden Road and Canonbury were originally four platform stations it seems a shame that H&I's island platform could not have been made level again as it retains a step and fencing along the middle at what is supossed to a major interchange.

The understandable and increasingly common complaint concerning seemingly illogical platform numbering is becoming widespread following infrastructure alterations/additions. There are, for instance, several Platform 0s on the national network and I gather that Stratford (E15 variety) is a particular dog's breakfast. I gather the problem arises through the cost of altering signalling layouts/software to reflect a more logical progression - far easier/cheaper to put nonsense in place rather than do the job properly. Yet another case of 'filing in the too diificult/expensive folder' and that says it all, really. Just a shame that from a passenger's point of view it is absolute nonsense. Still, who needs passengers?....

My understanding is that the works are still under way. Platform 1 at Caledonian Road is still happening, but isn't needed yet. Remember that there is still the full resignalling to done (it was postponed) and the loops still have to be commissioned. The problem with platform numbering at Highbury & Islington dates all the way back to when the old platform 7 was opened on the old NLL No. 1 single track. Whether we will ever see 'logical' numbering will depend on whether LU and Network rail can agree, after all it needs 3-6 to be renumbered before all the platforms on the surface can be changed. Maybe it will happen once the Victoria line is completely converted to the newer signalling system.

Do you think there will be a picture of the layout of the refurbished stations soon? All this talk of odd platform arrangements, numbering etc is confusing me

It's most unlikely that Platform 1 at Caledonian Road & Barnsbury will be restored as it is now almost completely obstructed by the stairs and MIP Lift. In any case, it would only be needed if the ELL were to be extended - also unlikely. The road through old Platform 1 is a long freight loop so no need for a platform. For some reason best known to them, NR is insisting that the number of the platform is retained, hence the island is numbered 2 & 3! We are trying to persuade NR to drop the reference to Platform 1.

There are, for instance, several Platform 0s on the national network ... Prior to its major re-building, Leeds (City) had a platform W, for west, and 1 to 12 and 17. When Leeds (Whitehall) closed Leeds was re-numbered 1 to 17. Preston also has a "Mail Platform", announced thus: "The [time and operator] service to [destination] will depart from the Mail Platform, opposite Platform One, accessed by the subway only."

I still think we will have to see what the final arrangement is. Platform 1 at Caledonian Road has been shown as an 'active' platform on all the plans that I have seen for the final layout, especially as platform 2 is on a reversibly signalled track.

Don't hold your breath! Remember 45% of the platform length has now been cut back from the side if the track. 10% is occupied by the stairs and MIP lift. The remaining 45% has been fenced off with permanent climb-proof 6foot high steel fence. Even if a train stopped there you would need a ladder and ropes to use Platform 1. As for Platform 2 having bi-directional signals - that's mainly for occasional ecs workings onto the East London Line by dual voltage 378/2 units.

Just to demonstrate my point above, take a look at page 4/5 of Modern Railways July 2010 (on sale Friday morning). You will note all of the above about Cale Road & B but I forgot to add that the level of the remaining bit of old Platform 1 has been raised about 14cm - so NO WAY will this ever be an operational platform again without major bucks being spent on relevelling, relengthening and major alterations to the stairs and MIP Lift.

Don't hold your breath indeed!
Wynyard station in Sydney was built with 3 island platforms. Platform 1/2 was intended for trains on a line to be built towards Manly. As a "temporary" measure until this line was built, the North Sydney trams were extended across the Harbour Bridge and used platform 1/2 as a terminus. When the trams were withdrawn in the 50s, the platform 1/2 area became a car park.
More than 50 years later, Wynyard still has platforms 3/4 and 5/6.

Whenever I travel to Blackpool to see family and change at Preston (and a short time when I was living in Preston) I used to muse as to whether the mail platform was publicly accessible. Even if I did once see a branch-off of the subway out of the corner of my eye, I'm sure I wouldn't have felt like I was welcome to venture down it.

This Station plan shown is out of date as this still shows the old layout. The Special Use Only Platform (7) - once used for Anglia services and occasional diversions due to "failures" on the No 2 DC line is now the main NLL westbound platform. I think National Rail should update this page as a matter of urgency. Martin

The plans of Crystal Palace and New Cross are also out of date. It wouldn't surprise me if others are also out of date too.

Sorry, been away (dealing with a job interview!!) Indeed, I have seen the photographs of the current situation at Caledonian Road and noticed the fence which does suggest that the platform closure is permenant. However, knowing how much money has been wasted on the project (putting signal posts in the wrong place etc.); it is possible that this is just temporary 'protection' as the track alongside is disconnected at the moment.
