Just noticed that the first passenger train out of Hammersmith H&C departs 04:37. What would be the latest time the unfortunate soul driving this train can actually report for duty? Such an early start must be a very unpleasant experience following or during overnight snow.

I do not have details of the Train Staff duty rosters for the H&C line, but it is more than likely that this first train is worked by a night duty train operator.

Certainly on the Piccadilly line, the earliest possible start in the morning is 4:45am, and the latest finish is 01:30. As DWS says, the first trains in the morning (and the last ones at night) are driven by the night turn drivers.

What undergroundgal says is basically the framework agreement between the unions and LU.
The earliest early turn book on at any depot is 04.45, which almost every single depot has. The latest late turn book off at any depot is 01.30, and again that is generally the case at almost every single depot.
Given that there are time allowances for actually booking on (this is a procedure which includes reading notices), a time allowance for walking/travelling to wherever the train is stabled, and then a further time allowance to actually prepare the train for service; there is no way you can simply book on and be driving a train a minute later.
Taking my depot, Upminster, as an example (though other depots will have very similar timings)....Our first duty books on at 04.45 and the train on that duty leaves Upminster depot at 05.12 and Upminster Platform at 05.18 - so our first duty of the day, but actually the third train of the day!
So to cater for those trains that run outside the 04.45/01.30 parameters, we have night drivers.

And of course at depots like Arnos, the trains are actually mostly stabled two stops away! There are seven trains on the sidings overnight, and several of these are used for staff trains. So, as an example, duty 005 books on at 0451, travels on a staff train to Oakwood that leaves the siding at 0504, and actually leaves Cockfosters Depot at 0539, entering service from Cockfosters at 0548. (well, 0548 and a half officially...) Duty 001 books on at 0445, and at 0504 takes a staff train from the sidings (the one that the driver doing duty 005 travels on) up to Cockfosters, stopping at Oakwood only to set down staff, entering passenger service at 0522. The first train to leave Cockfosters is at 0510, I believe, so that would be a night turn driver from Acton.
