Since the partial re-opening of the ELL, I had been trying to persuade my gf to come and try the new trains, without much success.
Finally, today I managed to persuade her that it was worth coming to see that it *is* actually reliable, smooth and quiet, etc.
But what a pallaver! "Change at Canada Water and meet me on the Southbound platform" I tell her. Just as she's arriving, announcements appear on the tannoy about no trains going North of Canada Water and all Southbound trains only going to New Cross, and how London Underground would accept Overground tickets.
I saw a guy handing out LO leaflets helping advise people what was going on, and a swarm of people gathered around him. When I finally managed to get a piece of his attention (an annoying little brat in front of me kept jumping in asking if he could get him a bus pass) it transpired he was an LU person, not an LO one, and he started going off on a long rant about how "LO are nothing to do with us, they don't tell us anything, we're London Underground, they're a totally separate organisation, but they won't put any of their own staff here, etc. etc." So whereas I was initially grateful that what appeared to be an enthusiastic 'marrying of the modes' at Canada Water was in actual fact a begrudging case of "why do we have to clear up the mess left by this b*stard son of a train company".
I explained to him I was surprised given that other LO stations have so many staff wandering about, on the platforms and elsewhere, and I had reasoned the lack of LO staff at Canada Water would have more been due to LU not *wanting* them there rather than LO not wanting to *be* there.

I'm sure when I've been at Canada Water and Whitechapel, LO staff have been on both those platforms, with LUL working with LO at Canada Water.

As vitesse quite rightly staes it is all down to who owns the station. On the North London Line all stations with the exceptions of Stratford, Highbury & Islington Gunnersbury & Kew Gardens (London Underground) & Richmond (South West Trains) are owned by London Overground so you will see LO staff at these stations. The problem is when you have different companies through a station, the company whose trains that stop there but dont own it often leave it to the owning station to make the decisions. Often when the NLL goes down at Richmond it is normally only the traincrew of LO who can find out what is going on and relay messages back to our colleagues on South west Trains. Companies tend to rely on different ways of contacting stations that is not there's, and this surely leads to misinformation and the suchlike. It could also well be that certain companies dont like, staff from other companies being based on their property. Hence why you sometimes get the sort of response you got at Canada Water today. I often when im in uniform and travelling on a bus or tube get asked a question about where does this or that go, even waiting at my local bus stop i get asked how is the service running, this is because my uniform as the London Transport logo on it. When you cant answer them they get rather annoyed or look at you as if your stupid.

Are LO staff based at Clapham Junction too? CJ has SWT, Southern and LO branding on the platforms.

Clapham Junction is run by SWT so lorol staff are not present. And before you mention it.. Yes Southern do have staff there on platform 17 I belive, or they did the last time I used the platform.

The ownership position for DC stations is as follows:
LO Managed South Hampstead, Kilburn High Road, Willesden Junction, Headstone Lane, Hatch End, Carpenders Park, Bushey and Watford High Street.
LU Managed Queens Park, Kensal Green, Harlesden, Stonebridge Park, Wembley Central, North Wembley, South Kenton, Kemton and Harrow & Wealdstone.
I have refered to all these stations as managed as the majority don't have any staff presence other than booking office staff other than an occasional gate line CSA.

As Dazza has mentioned LOROL do not staff Clapham Junction for any services. South West Trains staff their side of the station and services and Southern staff their side of the station and services and also LOROL services if they go into platform 17. On the West London Line LOROL staff Imperial Wharf, Kensington Olympia, Shepherds Bush and of course Willesden Junction. West Brompton is owned by London Underground. The reason for Southern staff managing LOROL services from Platform 17 is to signal to the Conductor that the platform is clear, as some of you might know 17 has the sharpest curve for a platform and the signal aspect is round the corner approx 100 metres off the platform If Southern staff are not present the train cannot depart until they arrive.

Rather than properly costing and putting in a FO banner, monitor feeds? Something is wrong somewhere if the received wisdom is that there needs to be people present!

I can confirm that the staff on platforms at Whitechapel and Canada Water are LUL staff as I work in the team that they are deployed from. AFAIK it is only a temporary measure, but we'll see...

As in "Temporary Sign" ?!?! ;D Just to add to this though, staff I saw on the platforms at both stations in question during the preview service DEFINITELY had LO emblems on them, not LU, and had LO issue foghorns, but I can only take from the above that they were LU staff wearing LO uniforms with "borrowed" loud-hailing equipment.

Why would LU staff wear an LO uniform? From a distance the LO and LU hi-viz vests are identical until you read whats contained on the rear roundel. And I think LU use loud-hailers too, not just LO.

Would the LU Special Requirements Team be deployed to LO stations? If so would they be issued with LO uniform items?

I cant see the point of having so many staff on the platforms, the Jubilee line has no need for them. I'm assuming the reason there are so many is because they need the NLL staff to have something to do.

Would the LU Special Requirements Team be deployed to LO stations? If so would they be issued with LO uniform items? The SRT are working at "LU" stations (Whitechapel and Canada Water) but, again AFAIK, they are allowed to work on the LO platforms/concourse, but only giving out info. They will be wearing their LU "SRT" Hi-vi's...

I travelled on LO from West Croydon last Saturday and both the train in front and the train behind had been cancelled, I did wonder whether the service had been reduced to 2tph as the line to the west had been closed by engineering works and Southern trains were (presumably?) using the reversing siding as well but there seemed to be no official explanation with staff just shrugging their shoulders about it all.

the platform staff were bellowing at the 2 passengers with their loudhailers to stand behind the yellow line This is actually very annoying and rather officious, in my opinion. As I said on another thread, this is sooner or later going to lead to raised tensions and antagonisms between staff and passengers - something nobody wants to happen.

Yes, I experienced exactly the same thing on that same stretch of line on that day. Every other train cancelled, yet the noticeboards insisted a "good service".

It seems another signal fault between West Croydon and Sutton has affected the WC branch of the ELL again today.

Indeed it did, I was told (rightly or wrongly?) that the signal problem was at Norwood Junction.
