Someone has just asked me "What is the tensile strength of the rails on the London Underground?" I appreciate it's probably not a value that is kept to hand, but if anybody does know it would really annoy the questionner...

As being totally unfamiliar with strength of materials I am prompted to ask: Wouldn't this have to do with the the length of the rail, whether it had a welded joint in that length, what type of rail it was (load bearing vs. electrical), what it was made out of and its age? Is the reply above for the spec as ordered and delivered for new load-bearing rail?
