Without giving away your actual address which of you lot that are actually employed by the tube lives the furthest from London? Your nearest main line station will do for location, or home town. Furthermore how long does it take you to get from home to job wether it be by car, train or other means? When I was on the job there was a guard at Acton who lived at Slough and PG Motorman lived down in Sussex. Some guys at the east end of the Central and District lived out in the wilds of Essex and some Baker Street men lived beyond Amersham. One Ricky man I remember lived way out in Buckinghamshire somewhere. So satisfy a nosey old b*gger and tell us how many miles YOU live from the job?

Strange that, I know of a couple of others who live in Wellingborough and do permanent nights. Is there something in the water? ;D

South Ockendon, which is near Lakeside shopping centre in Essex. Hence the message at the bottom of my post's!!
On a good day it's about 1 Hour 20 Mins to Acton, but I usaully allow 2 hours as you can't trust the railways!! ;D ;D ;D

Personally, my local station's West Ruislip. Takes me about 20/30 mins to get to Acton by car, or 45/50 if I go from Ickenham by Met and Picc and walk to the station (which I admit I rarely do! I know that we've couple of blokes who live in Corby (Northants). Strange thing is they live round the corner to each other. One always makes it without problems, and the other's always got 'problems'.......

In the early 90s, the 0710 SO Northampton - Euston was a bit like a LU staff train. I did hear that there was a driver who commuted from Doncaster

Do LU staff still get London Allowance if they live outside the capital like some of those mentioned?

When I first went to Baker Street Met in 1988 there was a driver there who lived in another country He commuted daily from Neath in South Wales ;D There was also a member of staff who lived in the Isle of Wight who was based, IIRC, at Neasden.

I live around 40 miles out in a quaint (I've heard it referred to as this once - though I think they had us mixed up with somewhere else) town in North Hertfordshire. My travelling time door to door is often quicker than my colleagues who live within the London area. I used to work with people from Peterborough, Goole, Grantham, Swindon, Portsmouth and, furthest of all, Newport in South Wales and Darlington - the last two did the daily commute at a nasty 2 hours each way

Re Wellingborough,it seems to be the new Bletchley as far as LUL staff are concerned, there is a sizable community there now.Oddly, apart from one Bakerloo driver they all appear to be duty manager grades!!!

Technically, I can beat all of that! My registered home address is in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear... Now that's a commute I wouldn't want to do every day, although it would give me an excuse for being late!
Obviously I also rent a place in London, with my nearest station being Sudbury Town.

Do LU staff still get London Allowance if they live outside the capital like some of those mentioned? We get the same rate no matter where you live. Obviously the commuting costs eat into your salary though. As far as Earls Court Depot is concerned i'm one of the further out at Haywards Heath, but we have a member of staff at Lewes, another at Eastbourne, a few at Luton and our furthest flung driver is from Bognor regis. Our DMT's come from all over the place with one of ours moved to Wellingborough or it surrounds recently. He doesn't do nights on a regular basis. Must be drinking the bottled type. ;D

Not strictly Tube. But according to my relative there is a Waterloo driver who lives in PARIS. Comes through the chunnel daily to work on the DC electrics. He is by the way English, but loves France so much he's moved there.

(Now that gives you something to wind ME up with) ;D The other, although we have good fish shops, is a fish you can get in London which used to be called "Rock Salmon" "Rock & Chips" with a large wallie and bottle of pop on fridays. Lubbly Jubbly. Up here you can only get Cod or plaice.

Cox's Of Letchworth and Taylor's of Baldock are two outstanding "chippies" in my neck of the woods. Both will also serve Rock and Chips, pots of mash potato to go with your pie and various other treats which chip shops should have. Cox's is also 3 times winner of the south-east "Best Chip Shop" award, which looks at food quality and customer service amongst it's judging.
(Maybe now I should get a commission for advertising!)

The best pie shops in London used to be Manzie's in various locations around East and South East London. Their liquor was the best and the pies were proper LAMB pies not the minced beef you get in a lot of places now. Oh....... Double pie/mash/liquor with chilli vinegar please? Drooooolll P.S A plate of jellies now and then ain't bad either.

Back to the original thread. In the late 80's early 90's I used to live in Glasgow and went up for the long weekend after nights.Wemoved up there because the Father-in-law was on his last legs and my wife wanted to be there for him.Anyway used to get 06:20 out of Euston on Friday morning, come back on the Nightrider on either Sunday or Monday night straight into work Monday or Tuesday morning(was I knackered that first night)I stayed with my mum in London.Travelling on the Nightrider was O.K. but it was a b*gger if there was an Old Firm game on,or if the Open golf was on at Troon.
