How many platforms remain on the Northern Line that are capable of taking 9 car trains (given the relocating of furnature if needed)?
I understand that Golders to Edgware (Plat 1) were altered and Highgate was built that length aswell. And then theres the lengths of the former LNER stations. How many remain though?
Thanks!!

The only Northern Line platforms that could readily take a 9-car train are those at Highgate. Hendon Central could accommodate a 9-car train with little modification. The platforms at Brent Cross, Colindale and Burnt Oak have been shortened from their former 9-car length, although the northbound starting signals at Brent Cross and Burnt Oak remain in their former position. Edgware Platforms 2 & 3 could definitely not take a 9-car train, though Platform 1 may have had space until recently when the lifts were built? As for Golders Green, there is some unused space at the ends of each platform, but a 9-car train here would be tight at best.

Although these images belong more in the Historical section; these reflect the situation in 1937 - there were two editions of this Supplement to the Traffic Circular, one in 1937 and one in either 1936 or 1938 - these are from the 1937 edition. HTH.

The passing loops at Brent were removed to allow for the platform lengthening. A number of the open air stations received wooden platform extensions that were subsequently (and probably easily) removed.

The other edition of this TC was in 1938. The major difference to the diagrams is that Edgware *is* included and can only manage 7 cars...........

Have the platforms at East Finchley been shortened? My recollection is that they were quite a bit longer than the trains in the 1960s. As they were designed and built at the same time as Highgate, I would have thought they would take nine cars.

Some fascinating answers here, and many thanks to MRFS for the diagrams. Who would own the archetectural/civils drawings for the stations on the former LNER lines? And would a FoI request bear any fruit?

The only ex-LNER stations that were rebuilt by LT were East Finchley and Highgate (surface), and the surface platforms at Highgate would not have been intended for 9 cars.
The stations beyond East Finchley are much as they were in LNER days, except for the removal of goods facilities.

Well, mainly - West Finchley has a new main building (and a *very* nicely kept timber shelter). High Barnet has had a step-free path round the end of the running lines.
I'd in general agree with Sydney Nick, but there is definitely a creeping LU-ification.
Still IMO the nicest stations on the network

Oh, and to refer to a previous discussion on the board - the platform signals are all at least a car's length beyond the platforms (on the HB-bound platform at West Finchley, the first overrun counter is actually before the physical signal). Was this anything to do with the nine-car running?
