Hi all, as posted in the Metropolitan Line area, I have added a few more shots to my Fotopic site, including these two taken at Wimbledon in February 1971. As per usual, I'm not too sure of the details of the stock concerned, so need a little help with information for the captions, if anyone can help, please. Thanks in anticipation! Click on the images to take you to larger pictures on my site, together with the, so far, rather inadequate captions! Thanks, Cheers, Geoff

The first District line photo is a Q stock train made up of Q38 trailers and (ex K) Q27 driving motors. Interestingly, this is quite a strange formation. These trains usually ran as 'A' DM-T-T-DM+T-DM 'D'. This train is made up of ?-T-DM-T-DM-T-DM. At this date, this train may well be going for scrap although there are people on board so it is more likely a farewell tour!
The second photo is a close up of the former K stock motor car converted to a Q27 driving motor

metman is correct in the identity of the cars but this must an 8-car set. The first photo shows two east end 2-car units which would have been coupled to a 4-car west end unit. To get a 6-car, you uncouple the 2-car east end unit. Towards the end of Q stock they didn't uncouple them in service. They ran as 6s or 8s (the 8s in the peak).
My memory of them is the A Type ep brake and the accelerating relay clacking away in the cab behind you.

I'm actually surprised the Q stock was still running on the Wimbledon service in 1971. I thought the Q stock was confined to the Edgware Rd service in 6 cars and of course on the East London Line! When did the converted Q stock get withdrawn? I believe special Q38 trains ran the ELL until Sept 1971.
Also while we're on the subject, what happened to the L and M motors that were converted to trailers? Did they have a similar plan to the Q38 trailers with the former cab area replaced by a pair of transverse seats and the cab door locked? I know the first round of scrappings occured after the A62 stock was delievered and this included many Q23 (ex G) stock cars along with the 14 converted Q23 trailers. Did this included some of the ex L/M motors?

When did the converted Q stock get withdrawn? I believe special Q38 trains ran the ELL until Sept 1971. Q Stock worked over the whole District until its final withdrawal on 30th June 1971. 7 specially formed 4-car sets of Q38 cars were retained on the ELL until a gradual changeover to CO/CP Stock in September 1971. No, the ends were converted to trailer ends complete with end sliding doors. For a while, they retained their motor bogies but stripped of motors and shoes. Later, I think some were replaced by trailer bogies from other cars as required. One of the ex L Stock motor cars was scrapped in 1966, the rest in 1971. Two of the ex M Motor Cars were scrapped in 1966, the rest in 1970-71.

Wow, I'm surprised they bothered to convert all L/M 22 motors into full trailers! They may have fitted K2 bogies to these 'new' trailers from scrapped Dreadnought and Circle stock-these bogies started on H stock (ex B stock) in the first place!

The train was running on a normal weekday service as far as I am aware, the people on board just being ordinary passengers. I was aware that the stock was not likely to be around for much longer, hence taking the shots. Wish I'd done the same for other varieties of stock as well - hindsight being a wonderful thing! Cheers, Geoff
