I have now managed to upload all of my Upminster Depot pics - here: dunsty.fotopic.net/c1750766.htmlSome of the pics appear to be duplicates - I took some with flash and some without because they bring out different details. The wood panelling in the Q- and R-s are just so, so lovely. As you can tell I am interested in signage of all sorts so lots of the historical stuff and not much at all of the current operational side of the depot. The ones of Kent and East Sussex's 'long charlie' are only brief, because we actually went to the KESR a few weeks before and saw it there - these can be seen here: dunsty.fotopic.net/c1744756.html

Great photos AI. I would like to use some for my District Electric Train series. [unashamed plug] It'll be a while before I get to the era of the Q and R Stock but I can see some will slot in beautifully. I'm currently writing F Stock (Article 14).
I was also interested to see they still use the old GEC button deadman on the Battery locos.

Coo I'd be absolutely delighted ;D PM me with your address, and I shall snail mail a CD-ROM of the raw unadulterated images.

Nope - RM's/RML's/RMA's/RMC's/RCL's etc, etc, don't have power steering. Much as I hesitate to disagree with Colin - all RMs had power steering. Predecessors such as RTs and RLHs did not. I did spend 6 weeks working in the Bus Development Office at Chiswick in the mid 1960s, alongside Colin Curtis!

Well it's been a while since I drove a Routemaster - I actually passed my PCV test on one (RML2616 out of Upton Park garage to be precise) - but despite knowing the number of the one I passed on, my memory must be failing miserably.
I do recall the steering being hard work - you knew you'd done a 9 hour shift on the 15's - but perhaps it was just the fact they are 1960's vehicles. Naturally modern buses feel more like cars when it comes to power steering.

Were there ever any car maps for the District that did not include the Circle?

Incidentally I believe it is intended to apply a little LTC to the interior of R49 in the not too distant future. That is when the seats from the Q35 trailer can be moved out from their temporary storage inside the saloon!!

I am not wanting to buy any maps. I just noticed that in the pics from the Open Day, many of the car maps featured both lines.

On the current line maps, what is the significance of what looks like an "E" with two dots above it. How is this different than the traditional "double-arrow" that represents NR interchange?

Are you sure your computer is rendering the 'arrows of indecision' correctly - I can't see an 'E' with a diaresis (Ë) on my versions?
