Dare I ask what your Acme thunderer is? It is a whistle but more than that it is a means of communication. When I started working on the railway we used to use them frequently to communicate over distance using a pre-arranged set of 'blasts'. These days most people will communicate by radio or mobile phone but those methods are not always available and the fixed telephones are not always available or suitably located. I last used mine a few years ago when testing the signalling at Kings Cross Picc. Another department were using radios on the same frequency as mine, the P-Way were wheeling rails back and forth on trolleys, there was no telephone available and we were of course underground. I was able to give commands from the platform and receive responses from my colleagues at 5s crossover by whistle! Brian

I learned the pinching ear technique - it works a treat every time I would not want to do that to the vagrant who refuses to get off because he claims he is homeless or the person who has vomited or pi$$ed over themselves, all of these I have witnessed over the years. That's why I also carry carry rubber gloves in my bag - not had to use them at the east end yet, but had to get fresh supplies all the time at the west end! Physically removing a vagrant from a train he has made his home in is likely to get you assualted, far better to dissuade him from staying on your train in the first place. Most drivers who do dead lates do as I do and switch off the heating on last trips, you can always spot the new drivers who leave the heaters on, as they take longer to stable. On many occasions I have arrived at Upminster and stabled before the train in front because he is still rousing passengers. I much prefer my way of operating to to your rubber glove technique!

Its a whistle. I've got one and very loud it is too. Indeed it is. Mine has the legend 'LMS' stamped on the side of it; I can't remember now where I bought it but it never fails!
