For quite some hours today the District was shut down because of "emergency engineering" at Whitechapel. Anyone know what was wrong?

My missus told me that the rumour that was spreading anongst passengers was that the roof of a tunnel had collapsed.

Apparently about 1 metre of the tunnel roof collapsed onto the track prior to start of traffic this morning, suspected as being caused by water ingress. Service was finally restored from approx 1200.

Some of the "top bods" from the "infraco" attended the course I'm currently on for the new control centre (we're using cardboard and MDF to simulate the new room - probably using the exact same materials on the final result ;D).
They claimed it was quite a minor "collapse" (although they naturally shied away from that word - "collapse", not "minor") and that it was believed to be an old repair/patch which had come away. The actual structure of the tunnel remained in tact.
The length of the shutdown was caused by a mixture of structural checks and the fact that the local B&Q didn't open until 10.30 on a Thursday due to staff training.

As a former employee of said DIY retailer I attest they sell quality at low prices. ;D
