To-day (Sunday) there was an engineer's possession at Borough Market so the only service from Charing X main line was a shuttle to Cannon Street. In the past, when this has happened, Cannon Street (District/Circle) has been opened. To-day it was closed: a little bird told me that nobody wanted the overtime - surely station staff aren't paid that much, are they?

Same thing happened last September. En-route to Heathrow with case-on-wheels in tow for long-haul and I found that Cannon Street Underground was closed despite main-line trains being diverted there because of engineering works. Same reason given - no staff. Trundled along the streets to Monument. No ticket office open. Pay at the other end (needed a priv). Upon arrival at Heathrow 1,2,3 the excess window was under siege. First of many queues that day and not a good start. Undoubtedly there were reasons (and I could have forked out for the full fare and used the machines but I'm a skinflint )

IMHO it's a but unusual not to get ANY volunteers.

It does seem to be very hit and miss whether or not Cannon Street underground is opened in these circumstances.
I see it from both sides, as I travel up on the mainline from Kent and sometimes end up walking from Cannon St to Mansion House to get to Earls Court. At least on those days there's no chance of me forgetting whether I'm supposed to stop there or not!

I'm forever forgetting to announce it's shut when it is and then announcing it's shut when it aint. Staff at Monument and Mansion House forgetting to change the "Cannon St closed" boards (esp on weekends) doesn't help matters either. Rumour has it that station positions at CST are highly sought after due to the hours...
