I noticed that both today and yesterday, and even a few times earlier this week, that the Wimbleware services have been cancelled due to "staff shortage". Knowing that many of the Wimbleware duties are assigned to drivers at Earl's Court depot, has another dispute arisen between management and the T/Ops?
(NOTE: if this is a sensitive topic, can it)

Earl's Court are short of drivers at the moment, they are 10 drivers short. I was spare a few weeks back and had to travel to Earl's Court to do one of their turns (obviously D stock work).

I notice Earl's Court has vacancies most of the time [according to the TC]

It seems that somebody has finally told the admin side that Earls Court needs drivers as well! I was orignally told that no new drivers would be going to Earls Court until at least June/July. That said, I found out last Tuesday that I am starting training for T/op at Earls Court tomorrow! Not complaining obviously, but I didnt like finding out by seeing myself turning in to a vacancy on the duty sheets!

Nice to be left in the dark until the last moment, isn't it?

The current problems have mainly arisen because too many drivers have been granted annual leave when they shouldn't have, coupled with the sickness and no pool. The facts and figures for Earls Court at the moment are (and bear in mind full strength is in the region of 160): No Pool (ie, 'spares' over & above the roster) - that's where we're 10 short. There's 12 off sick. Another 27 are on Annual leave. We have 5 on block training (annual refreshers). Then there's 3 on "alternative" duties. Obviously we do have a certain 'tolerance' * so that those on annual leave / off sick / training are covered - but I'm sure it's quite apparent that having 160 minus 57 equals................one or two little problems *= the 'tolerance' comes in the form of "annual leave cover" weeks built into the rosters, backed up by the pool drivers.

Are "alternative duties" things like light duties and/or secondments?

We do have around 8 or 9 drivers going through training at the moment, but a certain amount of politics and now a shortage of instructors is getting in the way of them being trained as quickly as we'd like. Hopefully normal service will be resumed soon. Chrish - will be good to see you. You may be trained at some point by Myself, ADW or maybe even our leader. see you on the road

Are "alternative duties" things like light duties and/or secondments? Not necessarily, but it could be - as it only affects three members of staff, I'd rather not elaborate.

Staffing must have been poor yesterday ...a D and two C's in Parsons Green and two C's in Triangle ... with no service disruption a sure sign of crewing problems ... and the Olympia 152 train was sent off to cover a notable gap in the Wimbledons. I know Upminster crews were also covering some Earl's Court turns.

They're going to need to as road trainers are a dying breed through promotions etc. I've got a feeling you've got a wait ahead though as I don't reckon they're going to be able to release you long enough to get you developed to deliver it.

How long does it generally take? I understand I need to do some shadowing (including hiking), learn how to do the Audio Visual and get a Depot Protection Master's licence?

Ideally, it would be good to shadow a road trainee for the full 5 weeks, but if you shadowed for the hiking and the last couple of weeks you would be prepared. Additionally you will need to go to ashfield house to do your CBT training day so you can assess on CBT (computer based training).
Depot protection master isn't essential as you will be going round in a one on one situation. Not only that but DPM won't cover you in the sidings anyway as these places are effectively running lines.
