I thought 83TS had single leaf doors because when they were ordered, LT didn't expect so many people would be using the underground.

Its both reason. Not as many people would be using the underground, so savings could be made by reducing door equipment needed.

just browsing through this thread and seeing the picture provided of the possible refurbishment standard, it is such a shame that such a 'recent' stock got scrapped.
One thing I'd like to add, particularly with reference to the Waterloo and City line usage, is that the 92 stock is newer than the 83, so it would be a little strange to suggest replacement of a newer stock with an older stock which, as has been uncovered, has many flaws.
In some ways I am glad that they didn't retain these trains for the Jubilee lines, as I think they'd have still looked 'odd' and somewhat inferior to the Jubilee line 96TS.
