As a retired LUL walla I like to keep an interest in my old line (District) and recently bought some DVD's of cab rides. One in particular intrigues me. In the dvd from Upminster to Richmond on leaving Elm Park westbound there are, between the C2C down and the westbound district, some large oblong vertical grey boards abot 15ft tall. These are situate adjacent to the open space known as the "Chase" What are these boards for and who's are they?

I think you are referring to the grey boards that try to shield the LU signals from the c2c drivers.
There is NO such facility the other way round of course! So we can see many visable RED signals.
They are in other locations too, Upney etc.

Thanks for the info on those boards. As for the comment on the purpose it shows you the the standard of drivers must be a bit poor if they can't recognise signals on a "foreign" railway two tracks away and lower at that. What about the signals on their own railway for wrong line working? When the LTS was first electified we called them "tramdrivers" which elicited the response from them that we we were "sewer rats"
