Quick question, how do the dimensions of a carriage and train compare to that of say a three car unit of something like 1972 ts? I appreciate they must be quite a bit smaller, because of the smaller track gauge, but does anyone have any figures? Also, how small are the wheels? They seem to be small enough to allow doors over them. How come this proved an insurmountable problem for LUL during the years of the space-train concept? Thanks to all!

Ahh, 4ft gauge!
Floor Height 695mm above rail, wheel diameter nominally 688mm though minimum can be 638mm, motors 35.6kw GEC 312AZ nose suspended axle hung.
Doors are 7.016m centre line from bogie pivots.

And having travelled frequently on both the "Clockwork Orange" and both 72 and 73 tube stock, the Glasgow stock is much smaller and can feel very cramped. While we are on the subject of the Subway in Glasgow, a £20m facelift was announced today, link here......... news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/8004777.stm

Well, at least the BBC got the refurbishment years correct... ;D
Sorry Benedict, but after reading the book, I've not spotted anything that mentions the car demensions.

I'd ought to pop over for a wee ride on it, been a couple of years since I last did. ISTR it smelt very damp down there.

Usually smelt of faintly Saturday nights haggis suppers when I travelled on it Sunday mornings to ring at the Cathedral. Lovely system; must take AI up there for a jolly.

Quick question, how do the dimensions of a carriage and train compare to that of say a three car unit of something like 1972 ts? I don't know the dimensions of a Glasgow Subway train, but a 3-car 72TS unit is about 48.04m long, 2.64m wide and 2.88m high.

There was something quite special about the battered haggis and battered black pudding (without any white bits in) - there used to be an ace chippy out on the Dumbarton Road.
Interesting that the signalling system is shown for an upgrade - this would be the third since the 1970s: first up grade was localised air main and trip cocks, second was fitting balises and computer control/oversight.

Heart attack on a plate? Pah!

That explains why you only drink diet coke! I only had a pizza supper once - I was starving and wandering around Maryhill slightly drunk.

Ah yes, I remember being in Rosyth one time, and the mobile chip van came around. (They just don't have this luxury in England) Battered haggis, battered black pudding, chips, sauce and salt. The business!
Anyway, we digress......

2.88m sounds more likely

Also the Glasgow Subway trains are ATO but with tripcocks, 1972 TS is not ATO.

Also the Glasgow Subway trains are ATO but with tripcocks, 1972 TS is not ATO. The Clockwork Orange is not ATO [1] and does not have tripcocks in the LU sense - no air main these days (see my comments upthread), anyway I wonder if it is worth plugging the talk that the renowned (and überknowledgeable) Brian Hardy is giving for the LURS: Tuesday 14 July 2009 "Two Quaint Undergrounds - Glasgow Subway and Post Office Railway". LURS meeting 19.00 for 19.15 in the upper room at All Souls Club House, Cleveland Street, W.1. Nearest station Great Portland Street. [1] the balises only give braking instructions on the approach to stations, track between stations does not have balises.
