Recently I have noticed some little round metal things about 1.5" in diamater attached to the station name sign poles at Richmond and Wimbledon stations. They are on the sign at the east-most of all platforms it seems, and are labelled 'Mag Touch'. I have sometimes seen the NR station staff go to these things with a metal pole type thing and attach there pole to it.
Does anyone know what these are for and what this does? I assume its a kind of test for something.
Thanks

Are we talking about something the size of one of those cell circular batteries and the member of staff uses something like those key fobs that you use to enter communal buildings?

It's the newer electronic system for station checks. The baton touches the metal pad to say the area has been checked. I understand that this will also be replacing existing security protocols on LU, having been used on NR for some time.

These are pretty common throughout the security industry now. The bus station I'm based at has dozens of these things positioned around which need to be 'touched' by the security staff to prove they've actually patrolled the area. (See this site.)
