That second one is outrageous - he's a lucky boy. I feel sorry for the drivers - even though they didn't hit either of them, they must have been so shaken up.

I was reading an article in an Australian Railway magazine about level crossing accidents there, by an NSW police officer giving their perspective - which commented they rarely had anybody surviving to prosecute...

I think the punishment for avoiding crossing lights should be permanent removal of their license and a £50,000 fine which goes to the train company, some of which given to the poor train driver as compensation! If you are on foot and avoid crossing lights, you should also get the fine, but if you do it again, the penalty should be death.
Another thing I am extremely angry about - trains hitting cars are regarded as train accidents. This discourages the public from using trains. It should only count as a train accident if the train derails, which is quite rare.

Anyone who jumps crossing lights and survives and gets caught should have their car actually crushed by a train... Then they should be handed the relevant section of the highway code, fined, prosecuted and then made to accompany a train driver for a month to see what its like. Just before the last day ends, throw in a 'level crossing light jumper' [having warned the driver that it was going to happen].

Hixon... Selby... Ufton... Lockington... Bzzzzt! Hixon was caused by a long load not a jumper. The low-loader with transformer was already on the crossing when the express struck in. As a result there have been 'Hixon modifications' to the standard circuits and signage for AOCLs, AHBs et al. Lockington was caused by someone turning onto the AOCR from their driveway, so the flashing reds were not as prominent - there have been some modifications to the standard installation of flasher units after Lockington (and I think some amendments to the boundaries in traffic flows between AHB and AOC crossings). It is thought that Ufton Nervet was a case of suicide by level crossing. There was no level crossing at Selby - mate of mine was in one of the carriages that ended up in the middle of a field, spun round. A - Automatic, O - Open, HB - Half-barrier, C- Crossing, R - remotely supervised, L - locally supervised.

However, they all involved a road vehicle in one way or another. I have somewhere, a VHS cassette bequeathed off Railtrack about road/rail interface accidents. The catalog is just shocking. An interview with a couple of drivers involved in such, families who have lost loved ones eithe rby being an innocent victim travelling in the road vehicle, interviews with police/ and staff dealing with the incident... And then a finale demonstration via several cameras - a test train ramming a car at 40mph. This was not the class 31 vs a Renault Scenic with inane input from Jeremy Clarkson.
