No way! Although the article says it is merely for personal reasons and everything, is that all though or is there more to it? Any of our pundits have other explanations? ;D

I did hear that he's going before Bob Thorogood retires next month. He doesn't trust anyone else to operate the thing.
Frankly, I don't either.

So, considering the massive changes upcoming before the olympics, and having the conservatives in charge, are things going to get worse?

So, considering the massive changes upcoming before the olympics, and having the conservatives in charge, are things going to get worse? Well, they certainly aren't going to get better. O'Toole has done a good job, and has kept the big ship stable. But I believe Boris is spoiling for a scrap with the unions. And O'Toole knows this and doesn't want any part of it. This does not bode well. Best of luck, Mr o'T.

To be honest, I think his opinion of Tube staff changed a lot from his first day when he is alleged to have said "There's an awful lot of staff". Other than the obsession over targets, I think he has been a good enough chap. An honourary RMT membership to him? ;D Who will replace him? A Boris puppet spatting for war? Better the devil you know.

Two months notice is very quick for a position of this sort. It looks like something has recently triggered it. It will take them months to find someone to replace him. My impression is that he has been thinking about it for over a year. The family issue was always a problem but something has been the final straw. I will be very sad to see him go. He was a gentleman and a good manager in a very difficult environment.

I echo Tubeprune's sentiments exactly - it is a very sad time for London Underground.
With all good wishes, Tim.
I wonder what will happen next? Who is of the right calibur to take on this role?
Back in the 1990s I heard many times that Chris Green "was the best boss LU never had". After all, he turned Scotrail and Network SouthEast around, to name but two.

I don't think there's any doubt about it - Tim O'Toole will be a damm hard act to follow.
He was absolutely the right man for the job and he more than proved it to me during the day of 7/7/2005.
I've also seen him on my train once or twice - how nice it is to have someone in his position still making time for his staff on the ground when he can.
I just hope the next person, whoever it may be, is at least half as good for LU as Tim O'Toole has been.

ToT was prepared to 'water down' the more 'avant garde' aspects of the 2000 new uniform into something more palatable (and realistic). What's the betting on, say, bright red or orange uniforms ready for 2012?

Something that hasn't been mentioned on here is that ToT was passionate about LU's history and supported the restoration/operation of heritage trains. What chance we get another with those views as MD? At least 'hi-flyers' from the private sector are less in fashion now given the state of the economy.

Howard Collins would be similarly minded. Geoff V would have no truck with any of it.

Tim O'Toole is a decent man and has done a great job, he's the only boss that gets out to listen to the workforce, I wish him all the best.

Well from tomorrow (7 May) he becomes a non-Executive Director of First Group plc! So he's not fully leaving the UK and still getting a bit of pocket money.
