83 stock were doomed mainly because of the single leaf doors. They may have found use elsewhere had it not been for that. But that's not that big a problem, surely? The D Stock on the District manages Ok with single-leaf doors, for instance. I always thought those 83 tubestock trains were super pieces of space age-looking rolling stock.

The D Stock on the District manages Ok with single-leaf doors, for instance. The 83s had two wide single leaf doors and two small doors(only one on DMs). The D stock has four wide doors on all cars.

IOW would have been an idea but then again at the time the 83's went they were unsure about the future of the line and the bother of converting them I wasnt sure about the 83 stock until I bought a video called 'tube trains all change' had quite a few clips of the 83's and they actually look very fast and efficient trains

When I was on the Jubilee in the mid 80s there was a mix of 83s and 72s, the 83s were actually prefered over the 72s by train crews. They were faster with the coasting and weak field switches operated, and the drivers liked the idea they could go along with the cab door open, the guards liked to be out the way of passengers.

The trains were not that reliable however. The Mark I batch was especially poor, although the mark IIs were ok, and would have been used on the PIcc. I used to like the 83ts, when they were first introduced I was a small child and I used to love playing guard, by opening the doors with push buttons - at every stop!

I think some of the equipment was slightly different. There wasn't much difference tho. The now withdrawn 1986 battery locos had equipment from Kiepe too, which turned out to be a bit of a disaster!
Think I heard the compressors and MAs gave a lot of trouble on the batch one 1983s

I don't recal the 83s being any worse than any new stock which I have worked.
I only ever worked the first batch as I had left the Jubilee long before the second batch had arrived, but I did travel passenger on them and there was some differences in the cars. The lighting on the second batch was uncovered, whereas on the first the lighting was covewred in clear plastic covers .

Could anything be worse than the 92TS?! the central line is the fastest most curved line with oversized windows (perfect for looking through!) ;D However the highly unsuccessfull 1983 ts is still my fav ;D

....and was the 83 stock any worse than the 1992 stock? Both stocks had thrir teething troubles combined with lack of crew familiarity, I don't recal them being any worse or better than the 92s.

The only trip that *I know* 100% certain was 83ts was a trip with my late grandfather from Finchley Road to Charing Cross in about 1986 or 1987. I think my only time on the 83ts and in CX Jubilee line station!
I did like them from that trip, they reminded my of the D Stock (which I was a regular on) with the single leaf doors and the orange / brown seat covers.
