If this was just turning them into locomotive hauled cars then I would say it's more than realistic. We did that in the 80's with 55 Harris EMU trains. My biggest question is can the traction equipment handle the extra weight? I go back to the Harris trains where a refurb program was undertaken on some of the units before thier conversion into loco hauled trains. The refurb added a bit of weight but they kept the original traction motors. The result was a train that didn't like hills.

This one produced by Network Rail is pretty powerful, though, without the need to be graphic. I actually believe that if one really wants to get the message across one should show the full horrific gory detail. It's not nice but it's life and I have always thought it wrong to hide the reality. Insulating people fosters a false sense of security. Of course it's not PC to frighten people too much these days but in my opinion being PC is so wrong on so many levels. In South Australia they had thier "Don't play with trains" adverts. It showed people turning into dust as the train hit them. I believe the Metro advert was more targeted at a yonger audience.

Adelaide's O-Bahn busway. It's a guided busway that sits on slightly elevated concrete track because the ground it sits on is poor quality. It was going to be a light rail line but they shelved that idea. It is the world's fastest guided busway. It was the longest until the Cambridge one opened fully.

It is possible to do. Our System Myki we can do on online top up and we can touch our cards on any FPD(Fare Payment device) or CVM(Card Vending Machine) on any bus, tram/tram stop or train station and there is is. The only catch is it can take 24 hours to appear. Although I have read in some cases it's only taken hours. I suspect it can take so long is because the trams and buses don't pass the depot(The action list gets sent to depots and sent off to the vehicles when the vehicle passes by) that often.

Well Londoners don't start conversations with total strangers on public transport. Only drunks and Australians* start conversations with total strangers on public transport. * often at the same time. Most of the time talking about the poor excuse that is Australian public transport. ;D

I can't see how the 'bumps' are big enough to cause any grief TBH - surely if that were the case they wouldn't be installed to assist visually impaired people!! Depending on the type some become a slip hazard when wet. I have read a case where someone got of a bus and slipped.

'Other countries have service on Christmas Day'. What other countries? Australia. Public transport ran in Melbourne, Latrobe Valley, Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra Adelaide and Perth. Outside the captials not as much(which is much more understandable) although it depends on where it is. In Adelaide the bus operators alter the rosters slightly so that drivers can at least have Christmas lunch or dinner. In Melbourne and Victoria it was free from first to last service. A side effect of that is V/Line trains have suffered overcrowding on some trains.

When the Scotsman was down under in 88/89 they moved the locomotive to South Dynon and coupled it up to R707 and R761 on one of the dual gauge bits and let everyone take a few photos. It appeared in an April edition of a Uk rail magazine with the caption saying the Australians the converted it to broad gauge. Apparently it did not go down well.
The same picture appeared a month later with a caption along the lines of "Anybody notice the date of this edition?"

2. British drivers (and cyclists) generally show a lack of respect for buses that seems rather unique to this green and pleasant land. They seem to look upon the bus as a challenge - hence the flood of cars rushing to pass a bus when it is obvious he is trying to pull away from a stop. The length of a bendy bus presents a more interesting challenge, and when the challenger loses, it is the bendy bus that automatically gets the blame. Here it's the same. This sign is on the back of just about every single bus: www.austlii.com/au/legis/sa/consol_reg//images/1999.219.un80.jpgFor many people it seems to be a suggestion not lawArtic buses work well around these parts. Most major Australian cities have artics in some form. Most see usage on major routes(Such as Sydney Buses Metrobus routes, Adelaide Metro's O-Bahn Busway routes and in Brisbane the Busway network and Melbourne's Doncaster SmartBus routes) however they do see usage on regular bus routes and school runs where some streets aren't exactly wide(Such as in Melbourne the 811/812 and 834. While we are at it though the middle of Dandenong aswell.) They're also very handy on Rail Replacement runs.

On Board Hitachi 279M on a Flemington Racecourse train. This train while heading to the racecourse is actually a Sydenham train. Due to RRL works all Sydenham trains were replaced by buses between Footscray and Sunshine. With a very strange bus replacement. In the couple of videos below the driver gives a good explanation of what is going on:

Borrowing preserved locos is regular down here:
There's at least 6 being used at the moment.
It's quite a good little money earner for preservation groups.

Would something like this being rolled out in Victoria be a good replacement for a paper ticket? www.robx1.net/victkt/myki/jpg/z09_0031.jpgIt's basically a cardboard version of a myki. When the system is fully working it's only available in 2 hour and Daily. Anything longer you have to buy a proper card.

I am currently on holiday in Amsterdam, where a 'paper' Oyster card equivalent can be issued for just one day from a machine... Could the paper ticket ever be replaced by a temporary 'paper' Oyster card? Why stick an expensive RFID chip into a piece of paper to be thrown out at the end of the day? What a waste. Coming soon to Melbourne: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Myki_Short_Term_Front.jpgThe Short term ticket is only for 2-hour and Daily tickets at a slightly higher rate than an actual card. This is what's in the Short term ticket: www.robx1.net/victkt/myki/jpg/z09_0033.jpgWhen Myki in Melbourne is fully working We will be able to buy Adult mykis from CVMs on Trams and Train stations. Buy and top up at Booking offices, 7-11's and online. Along with the Auto top up. In terms of Melbournes equipment: Much smaller.
