Looks like I'm not making it. Decidedly under the weather and have spent the last two days in bed. I've updated the first post. Have a good time, all of you who are going!

Yes, we're having one! Apologies for the very late organisation of this; hopefully your social calendars aren't completely booked up already! As is usual, we'll be meeting up at 2pm on December 9th, which is the second Saturday in December. For old times' sake, we'll be meeting up at the Penderels Oak in Holborn. It's pretty much equidistant between Holborn and Chancery Lane stations, so it's served by the Central and Picc lines. As it's currently up for sale, this might just be the last time we get to visit it in its current form. If you've never been here before, this is its page on the Wetherspoons website. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it! Extra information added 11:15am on Saturday 9thI'm afraid I am rather ill and tucked up in bed. So I'm not going to make this. Therefore, no forum phone. Have a great afternoon and I'll hopefully see some of you before too long! Extra information added 1:40pm on Saturday 9th by Chris MWe have table 10, which is at the back of the pub on the ground floor beyond the bar.

I must admit I'm really not sure what the point of this is. If I'm telling someone to take the District Line to Richmond, I'm going to tell them exactly that. The District is clearly shown as the green line in the lines guide, and if they're from out of town I can tell them it's both the District and it's shown as the green line on the map. Telling them to take U03D just seems unnecessarily cumbersome. Seems to be taking something that's relatively well designed and understood and making it harder to use? I don't get it.

I've been through this thread and cleaned up some of the quotes. Please be selective when quoting previous quotes; it is rarely necessary to quote an entire post, especially if you're replying to the post immediately above you.

Quite happy about this! Wifi is great if you're walking through the station but quite hopeless when you're on a train.
I've found there have been many times when I've been sat at the front of a train and my phone has locked on to the first wifi access point in the station. By the time the train's stopped, this access point is now at the other end of the platform and the phone is still trying to contact it. By the time it finally gives up and locks on to the closest access point, the doors have closed and the train's pulling out. I've often found the only way to get wifi working is to manually turn it on when the train is about half way into the station. The phone then connects to the AP that's nearest to the front of the train and away it goes.
I've also had occasional problems with authenticating on the WiFi Extra network which seem to be station specific and intermittent.
The roll out of cell phone signal is fantastic; my phone just gets handed off between the cell outside the station to the cells inside the station seamlessly and away it goes. The only downside is having to listen to other people's phone calls on the deep level lines!

Those videos (all of them) are fantastic, thank you both for posting. What a great snapshot of the tube as it was back then - brought back some good memories. The sound of those A-Stock motors in the first video!! Only thing that could have made it better was hearing the air being dumped at the terminus to finish the video off!

I have an A3 printer but I'm not looking for an A3 print; I'm looking for an A4 print to sit under my SWR A4 print.

It's "just about readable", but that's not good enough for going on my wall. The SWR map is crystal clear and readable from a surprising distance; the TfL map is fuzzy and unreadable until I'm up close. As zbang said, it's possible to zoom very far in using a PDF reader, but it doesn't print out that way.

Since 2006, I've had a printed tube map on my office wall. This map is now well faded and very out of date. I downloaded the latest tube map from TFL, printed it out, but because there's so much more on the map, it's tiny, hard to read, and the text quality is poor. I tried extracting just the map from the PDF at high resolution but it still looks awful on paper. I tried the "large print" map just in case but that was no use either. I also tried just sticking a regular tube map to the wall but nope, too small!
At the same time, I decided to replace my similar vintage South West Trains map with a current South Western Railway map - that printed out perfectly with great text quality and sharpness and looks great.
Is anyone aware of a high resolution tube map that would be ideal for printing?

I'm on my way! Tho somewhat delayed because of the bus strikes. I'll hopefully get there just about at 2pm. If anyone gets there earlier, the table is booked under the forum name.
The forum phone will be turned on once I get to the pub - number is 07476 845057 - so if you can't find us or the pub, call or text!

IMPORTANT: CHANGE OF LOCATION!Due to Wetherspoons no longer taking reservations or not answering the phone at most of the pubs I tried, I have had no choice but to find an alternate location. Therefore, we are now meeting at The Monkey Puzzle ( The Monkey Puzzle's Website - has their menu) This is a Hall and Woodhouse pub that is located between Paddington and Edgware Road stations. It's less than a ten minute walk from either station; the staff informed me if you walk at any kind of reasonable pace you'll be there in five. Meeting time is 2pm.From PaddingtonExit the station using the pedestrian ramp (not the Elizabeth Line exit). Cross the main road, then walk along London Street. Pass Norfolk Square and Norfolk Square Mews on your left, then take the next left on to Sussex Gardens. Walk two blocks, then turn right onto Southwick Street. The pub is in the corner. From Edgware RoadThe station is on the corner of Cabbell St. and Chapel St. Exit the station and cross Chapel St, then walk down Cabbell St. Follow it to the end, then turn right on to Old Marylebone Road (A501). Cross over Edgware Road (A5) on to Sussex Gardens. Walk two blocks, then turn left onto Southwick Street. The pub is on the corner.

I've cleaned up this thread a bit. Folks, I've asked before - please be selective about the part of a post you wish to quote rather than the whole post verbatim, particularly if you are replying to the previous post in the thread. There is very rarely a good reason to quote an entire post in its entirety.

Just a gentle reminder about this. Places are starting to book up for Christmas and I'd like to get our spot booked as soon as practically possible. So, please do let me know if you'd like to come along - the more the merrier!

What a fascinating and well filmed bit of history. As someone with a side interest in old lifts, this brings together two of my favourite things. Thanks for posting this.

I've just spent some time tidying up this thread and removing a lot of unnecessary quotes. I have left a note on each post I've edited. LOCATION CHANGED - NOW AT THE MONKEY PUZZLE FROM 2pm- SEE POST BELOW FOR DETAILSAs noted, this year's gathering will be on Saturday, December 10th. In a change, we'll be meeting at the Sir John Oldcastle. This is a Wetherspoons in Farringdon, just a couple of minutes' walk from the station.
Walk along Cowcross St towards Farringdon Road. Once you reach Farringdon Road, the pub is in front of you, across the road. If you've reached Pret then you're walking in the wrong direction! Link to the pub's page on the Wetherspoons website is here - click.
Please RSVP here and we'll reserve a table of appropriate size!

I do wonder how many of the 70ies era lifts (Otis or otherwise) still in use have their original relay logic controllers.

Mod note: A number of posts in this thread have been edited to remove unnecessary quotes. Please do not quote the entire post above you verbatim when replying. There's no need and it just wastes page space meaning more scrolling when reading the page. By all means selectively quote where necessary, especially if replying to a post further up the page.

For anyone looking for something to watch this evening, the Medical Detectives show is covering the Kings Cross fire. It's not the most detailed programme (in general) and I expect technical inaccuracies, but if you have nothing better to do, it's on at 7:30pm on CBS Reality (Sky 146 Freeview 67 Virgin 148 Freesat 135)

I've always found the Jubilee between Waterloo and Canary Wharf, and the Northern going northbound from Balham to be particularly bad. I once tried to measure it but it maxes out my phone's mic so I get an inaccurate reading. I did consider contacting TfL but then figured what's the point; I'd just get a template reply in return...
