Thanks, I might just have to plump for what I think best represents the no smoking compartments.

I'm trying to fathom out which compartments were No Smoking in the 1950's. Am beginning to think it was different on the 2 sets which doesn't help.
Also there's a sticker in the window of the compartment next to the louvres on the motor third which I can't read. Would this have been Ladies Only?

Next question which may have been answered already, which locos took the branch set back to Neasden? A met or BR steam loco, or loco change at Ricky? I don't think it's been answered as it's something that's been puzzling me too.

From discussion with Charlie I'm pretty certain the teak effect is painted on (no idea how). AIUI there were 2 sets at the end exchanged on a Saturday morning. I haven't been able to track down a repaint date but pretty sure both sets were in brown by the end of steam on the branch. A C13 could legitimately work with either teak or brown but the Ivatts only worked with brown sets. I have no numbers on my cars as from photos they seem pretty much unreadable from normal viewing distance.

Mantles Wood finally has a Chesham set! I was never going to build a brass 3-car set, so knew once a 3-car set would be available RTR it was a ‘must have’. With Rapido bringing out an E class loco that will be 2 huge gaps in the roster filled. rev Chesham set a by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr rev Chesham set b by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr

Yes, that’s my friend! 😉 I really recommend these they have been very useful as they are an exact match for the EFE cars. All you have to do is get a 2mm drill bit and just open out the bearing holes, add a top hat bearing and fit a 10.5mm wheel set. Much easier than the Metromodels efforts! How have you coupled cars together with those bogies pls?

For those that don't know, Ellis Clark have been building a reputation with their O scale items and have now announced their first OO product. £325 per set of 4, with 3 livery choices. Just the job for those widened lines layouts. (I have 2 sets of Ian Kirk ones that I bought at reasonable prices way back so now face a dilemma!) clarkrailworks.com/blogs/news/quad-art-coaches

There's also the class 483/1938 stock at Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway, not working yet. When I spoke to them last year they were hoping to get one set hauled in 2023 by some complicated means, and the other set battery operated as a longer term project. What do you mean hauled by some complicated means ? The channel island of Alderney has a railway with a two car set of 1959 tube stock moved up and down the short line by a 0-4-0 Diesel Locomotive. I forget the exact details (poss due to the locos available at LMMR and their capabilities) but he was talking in terms of some kind of converter wagon and associated pipework being needed between Class 08 and the 1938 stock

Mine was fine except it was derailing it one point which was admittedly a bit iffy but other stock was ok there, so I relaid the track better and she was fine. However there were quite a few reports elsewhere of the bogies derailing quite easily which was sorted by fiddling with the springs holding them in place. Some reports of noisy motors not quietening down with running-in, but no reports of rocking afaik.

Pity I don't know how to post pictures on here. You can't post pictures directly on here. You have to post them somewhere else like Flickr (plenty of other hosting sites available). Once on there, you can post a link and simply copy the link with your post which will then go and find the picture on Flickr and display it within your posting. It may seem complicated at first as you have to create an account on Flickr (or other host) but once you've done it a few times it's like riding a bike.
Edit: forgot to add, there used to be a rule that images on here should not be greater than 800 pixels wide, so you'd need to edit your pic to that size before posting on eg Flickr and then linking to it. However I can't seem to find that rule now.

Just a little update to show I’m still in the land of the living. I’d been wanting a Fowler 4P 2-6-4 tank to complete the Chiltern local roster. These weren’t as common as some other 2-6-4’s but certainly not rare either. I’d been waiting for a reasonably priced example to come up for auction. In the event 42315 was reasonably priced, nicely weathered and in addition had actually been shedded at Willesden and Neasden in the 50’s. She just needs a lamp, replacement steam pipe, dummy screw link coupling on front and some crew. rev 42315 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr About 18 months ago Sonic Models (a new entrant and available via Rails of Sheffield) announced an ex-LNER A5. My wallet heaved a sigh of relief as the A5’s departed from Neasden on the early 50’s and before my timeframe which starts at 1956. Then I discovered 69801 returned to Neasden April 1956 in connection with some celebrations of the opening of the GW/GC joint line. She’s quite a chunky beast and gives me yet another type of large tank loco. It’ll need renumbering, weathering, crew, coal and dummy screw-link coupling. Oddly the lamps are moulded-on in express lamp code, so they will need to be changed to a local lamp code. Others have said they will be changing theirs so I’ll wait and see just how they do it before I start surgery. rev 69804 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr

This autumn I bought a Q38 driving car so I could have variations with my 4-car Q stock set. Since when, Phil Radley has passed, and I’ve had a spell in hospital (just 24 hours but still recovering), so I haven’t had a chance to work on the Q38 at all. This update is just on other projects, two more Black 5’s (making a total of four as befits a Great Central layout) a ‘French’ or ‘cupboard door’ 16T mineral wagon to make a change from all the other more normal 16T wagons, and a Blue Pullman kitchen car conversion. Someone is now doing 3D printed conversions to make a kitchen car and also some variations of parlour cars as Triang only made the one parlour car. rev 44760 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr rev Black Five 45147 side 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr rev 'French' 16 tonner 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr rev Blue Pullman kitchen car 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr

No, you have to paint them. There's also about 3,000 sleepers that needed toning down to get rid of plastic look. Good job I'm retired A lot of the track was sprayed with Tamiya TS1 which is a kind of lacquer. You need to wipe it off the top of rails before it dries, but it did speed things up. The sleepers were painted individually but I could do a bit at at time as the Tamiya spray had already rendered them less plasticky. rev a Tamiya Spray 800px by Sarah S1ddons, on Flickr

A new loco has joined the stable at Mantles Wood (an ex-Metropolitan Railway F Class) and fills a gap in the fleet. Is that what you wanted to know if LH or RH drive for ? Yes indeed, I didn't know which side to put the driver so that was holding up detail completion. The last things I normally do are crew, coal and lamps.

I believe Modelmasters gave up doing anything TfL licenced as it didn't pay (could be wrong of course but eg they stopped doing the numbers for Met Bo-Bo electrics).
I guess the trick would be to see if you can find a suitable font that's not Johnston or P22 for doing wording like Morden-Edgware and car numbers which I'm pretty certain wouldn't be copyright.
