Not terribly relevant to the incident but I have actually been to that Richmond station. Made a point of visiting when I was out in Sydney doing some work for Cityrail many, many years ago. They'd just painted all the lamp posts red in a "NSE" stylee. I see the Oz press don't spare the gore in their reporting. I visited Richmond station once in 1985 when someone dropped me off and I returned to central Sydney. From memory, it was a short trip on a DMU, and I had to change somewhere where the wires stopped. NSW Road deaths this year as a comparison (23 so far)

Yes, would have been Plaistow, not West Ham!

I remember seeing it in the platform at West Ham on the way go a game at Upton Park a few days after. If I remember correctly, the bomber got on the wrong train (Eastbound) at Stepney Green.

Apologies if someone's already posted this, but there appears to be an S stock on a viaduct in 1970s Gloucester at the start of Eddie the Eagle. Great film though!

Thank you for this! I remember going to Kew Gardens once from Broad Street, probably autumn 1983. How it has changed.

For those long-in-the-tooth like me, will remember that before the end of steam hauled trains (both on the Underground and BR) there were virtually no trees on the embankments largely to reduce fire risk and to provide hay for the shunting horses. The cost saving decision to stop keeping embankments cleared of undergrowth and trees while improving the situation for wildlife and reducing noise has created other costly problems. The dreaded 'leaf-fall' is the most obvious one but embankment stability is another. It is true that some trees may contribute to the stability of an embankment or cutting but some varieties (Silver Birch is one that comes to mind) have a flat root ball and can make things less rather than more stable.
The increase in vegetation has also allowed the embankments and cuttings to be become home to burrowing mammals (foxes, rabbits, badgers etc.) which can also have an adverse effect on their stability. Are there some varieties that are used for stability and lack of leaf-fall problems? There has been some replanting at Moor Park and around the North Curve between Ricky and Croxley.

I no longer live there, but when I did the trains that did start in the bay were extremely useful on crowded mornings.

By the time the A stock came into Ricky I the only seats left were generally in the middle of the threes, so were extremely uncomfortable. I personally don't mind the S stock seats too much.

<excerpt> Although theoretically A-stock had more seats, with the increasing size of people in recent years, the three-abreast seats became in practice two-abreast, and were difficult to get into and out of when crowded. </excerpt> I have to agree here, squeezing into the middle of the three-seats gave me backache! I'm generally happy with the more open layout of the S stock, but I generally don't mind standing.

I have a question: I have to make the decision wether I should spend about 500 £ to fly to London, book a hotel, etc. in order to attend this event quite soon. Unfortunately I am rather tight on money at the moment, so I'd only like to really do this in the case that this is probably the last such occasion in the foreseeable future.
Thank you and greetings from Austria! benkda01 Hi Benkda01 Just a quick heads up that the Champions League Final is at Wembley that weekend, so hotels could be at a premium; if you are going to come over, it would be worth booking anything before the finalists are decided. Best wishes

I quite like S stock and don't mind the seating, but: a) Not enough handrails when you stand b) The ones that are there are badly designed and hard to hold onto (I'm 5'7", so what it's like for other heights I don't know)

And yet we successfully moved our share 60,000+ football fans from Wembley without incident (well apart from some overcrowding here and there). </quote> I was going to say, it couldn't have happened at a worse time, with an evening game on at Wembley. Jubilee line running well at least helped.

I quite like them, but they could definitely do with more (and/or lower) handrails for people standing.

On Thursday 16th Chiltern put on extra carriages for the 2357 Marylebone - Aylesbury as there were problems on the Met and lots of people waiting.
Oh, and just a quick thank you to the station staff for keeping the platforms clear during the snow.

Thank you to the staff in Ricky who were handing out draft copies of the timetable last night, which helped us get in. Good on them if they were doing that off their own backs, however, not every train is 100% guaranteed to run as per that timetable (as is the case on any day). They did qualify this with an "all times are approximate and may be subject to change" line at the bottom. The 0659 Chiltern train was cancelled this morning, apparently due to passenger action at Stoke Mandeville, but did get on the (timetabled) Baker Street Met at 0710.

Hi, greetings to all, first post here!
Does anyone know the reason for the timetable changes for the Amersham branch from 13th December, and in particular, why the 0733 Rickmansworth - Baker Street was withdrawn?
