Apologies, FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) is the Stadler product family from which classes 745 and 755 are derived from. Phew. Thanks for that, what with 'Flirt' and 'Gobblin' I was beginning to wonder who wrote the timetables-Harold Robbins? Haha Just an aside, how will 'FLIRT' affect the 379 stock? Are Greater Anglia keeping it or will it so to another part of the Country? Personally I'm baffled by the need to replace it on the Stansted Express. It ticked every box as far as I can see and the new German trains, apart from their curvy noses, add nothing for the passenger?

I was passing Meridian Water station this afternoon and noticed on the platform for the Stratford service, instead of the usual 8-carriage 317 unit, there was a 4-carriage 379 unit. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Went by White Hart Lane this afternoon. Old Ticket office demolished... 20200810_142812 by james tuite, on Flickr The powers that be at Haringey Council have decided to install 'rain gardens' all along White Hart Lane (the final ones going in now, in front of the old ticket office location). These are sunken flower beds, a foot lower than the pavement and will help 'prevent flooding'. I have never encountered flooding on White Hart Lane but can imagine when its dark and several thousand people are walking by, one or two may stumble into them 20200810_142824 by james tuite, on Flickr Big intentionally rusty railings and gate now surround the 'old' London-bound staircase 20200810_142759 by james tuite, on Flickr and similar gates are at the foot of the old northbound stairs and a second gate is now on the right with a path leading to the new stairs further along 20200810_142724 by james tuite, on Flickr

Check rails to try to prevent derailed vehicles hitting the bridge piers? EDIT: If you watch the cabview Youtube videos from Germany, you will see this kind of arrangement at many bridges, on double track usually only on the side of potential collision. Also frequently seen on overbridges and viaducts. Stupid question, but how exactly do they work?

I would have added this to the 'STAR and Tottenham Hale' thread but its been locked up. Anyway, take a look at this picture looking south from the new third platform at Tottenham Hale. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the V-shaped device in the middle of the rails that extends just beyond the bridge? 2020-07-26_09-42-41 by james tuite, on Flickr

It's amazing how the walls are now on their third set of tiles in the last 44 years, yet the original ones on the walls lasted 72 years and are still on the ceilings without any issues. Yes, I would often think when watching sheets of tiles falling off the Victoria line, why doesn't this ever happen to its Edwardian predecessors?

It's not that long a walk from Bruce Grove - indeed most people walk from/to Seven Sisters anyway! well there's the solution ...dont use White Hart Lane station, just walk the 1.8 miles to Seven Sisters - simples!

I agree the new ground has made travelling by train to the ground after the game much MUCH worse.
some factors that havent been mentioned...
1. The 'new' ground now has a 2 miles radius CPZ ...you can't park a car without a residents permit inside that area. It is more than double the size of the old parking zone. For example, I could park on Queen street just south of the North Middlesex hospital, giving me a 20 walk to the ground. Now parking controls extend way noth of the north circular road, ending just south of Edmonton Green - an infeasable 45 minute walk. Thousands of people must now be travelling by rail instead of car. In Cheshunt, parking around the station on matchdays is far higher than before and I'd say these people previously drove to Tottenham. So, add them to the already increased numbers
2. Buses divert away from the ground - after the club stating they would be press for them allowed onto the High Road outside the ground. Routes like the 279, 149 and 259 all divert at Bruce Grove, go along the Great Cambridge Road and A406 and rejoin on Fore Street. Travelling by bus is therefore a non-starter, forcing people onto the trains

No - it was compared to a garden folly. He used all the construction methods to sign off his time with London Transport. Coming up to the surface to cross a very short bridge was hardly necessary. Okay.... yes, I see what you mean with sections of cut-n-cover, deep level tube and the rise to the surface to ctoss the river Crane, but is it true to say that's all 'for show?' ...isn't deep level tunnelling the most expensive method of railway construction and should be avoided where possible? Personally I#m quite a fan of the Heathrow extension, my only gripe is what happened later when terminal five was made into a separate branch instead of being kept in the loop line

Follenfant's other big project was the Heathrow extension otherwise known as his folly. The route has surface and cut and cover sections linked to the tunnelled section by a very short bridge. All the classic construction techniques for a railway. why his 'folly?' whats 'wrong' with the Heathrow extension?
