I found a bobble hanger on eBay the other day - item 290299382026...well, needless to say I placed a bid and eventually won the item. It arrived the other day and I've been trying to decide the type of train it would have been removed from ever since - obviously it's from some kind of Surface Stock, but I don't know which type - I'm thinking it may be from a CO/CP car, but can anyone confirm/deny this?

Travelling between Elephant & Castle and Balham last week, I noticed that the driver of the train I boarded was wearing a set of ear defenders as the train entered the platform; seeing as I have never encountered any other drivers wearing this unusual fashion accessory, I'm guessing that it isn't very common to do so - unless anyone knows differently, of course!

Well, the conversion gadget arrived the other day, and the audio was duly made into separate MP3 tracks - I'm very pleased with the end results - they were much better than I'd expected they'd be - I even managed to convert some of the crackle as well!
These files are now available on the site, should anyone wish to hear them. (One of the tracks is a recording of the W&C line's famous 'travelator' at Bank!) Also added is a car diagram for the East London line from about 1990 - just after the future became orange!

I bet the walk back to the other end in order to retrieve the key seems to take forever as well!
Thanks for the information on this procedure; it's greatly appreciated!

I spotted a BBC Sound Effects record (whatever one of those is...I'm far too young to know! ) on eBay for the Victoria line earlier in the week...well, of course I was keen to hear exactly what sound effects existed, and so out of morbid curiosity pressed the 'buy' button. Anyway, said record arrived today and features both the Victoria and W&C lines - the latter features the Class 487 / 1940 Stock trains. The 1967 Stock must still have been fairly new when the recording was made as the train featured sounds a lot quieter than they all do these days! The only exception to this is when a compressor kicks in - by comparison this is quite loud, although that may simply be due to the recording equipment being placed near where the compressor is located. I've ordered a turntable which converts vinyl into a digital format, so once that gets here I may be able to upload the recordings to the Tube section of my site, although obviously there may be copyright issues involved with that, so we'll have to see. (If I can do it, I'll try to keep a bit of crackle on the soundtrack, just for that 'authentic' feel!) Does anyone else have anything like this in their record collection..?

What is the procedure for closing down the cab of an A Stock train - I only ask as I've noticed T/Ops briefly reaching down into the space below the controls; presumably to operate a button or lever located in that area, and not simply to tie a loose shoelace!

Yep, I've experienced both types of compressor now - I'd forgotten to take a glance at the step-plate as I was boarding but I guessed it must be an A62 when the hammer drill-sounding compressor kicked in!
I think I prefer the high-pitched whirr of the rotary compressors as well - one of my videos filmed at Chesham was recorded whilst the compressor was in operation. I must try and capture the sound of it kicking in as well - just for posterity!

That's been very helpful - I assumed that 'marker lights' were the lights which depicted a train's destination (for example, the type seen on the 1938 Stock) but obviously now I know that this isn't always the case! Thanks for the information!

I was travelling on an A62 between Kings X and Wembley Park the other day and couldn't help noticing that the compressor (when in use) was incredibly noisy - is this normal or was it simply due to the age of the equipment that the compressor's presence was very obvious?
In other news, I spotted a grey undercoated S Stock bodyframe partially visible in the Bombardier works earlier today - it didn't have a roof/doors/windows; in fact I only knew it was an S Stock due to the bodyframe's shape!

Interesting modification to the '56 Stock! From reading the other replies in this message, was it the case that the '59, '62 and A Stocks were all originally built with marker lights but then changed to the twin headlights at a later date?
If so, does anyone have a picture of an A Stock DM car front in its 'original' condition, and when did the conversion take place?

I spotted the message about Gants Hill being closed due to vandalism as well - thank goodness that the damage could be sorted within the day.
It's a shame that the traction current wasn't on over Christmas; without giving too much information away, was this station an 'easy target' for the vandals?

Thanks for the information on this - I think I probably prefer the original circular lights as well! To me, the square-based ones look a bit too 'modern' for this type of train!
What happened to the 1956 Stock headlights?

Hi all, I've just had a look at the 'News' page on the Video 125 site...looks as if the Victoria line DEV (and a documentary of some repute) is being filmed now, and should be ready by Easter 2009...well that'll beat a chocolate egg for me next year...good - it'll keep the weight off me! Predicted quote from the DEV voiceover: "Incidentally, the Victoria line was the world's first full-scale automatic railway..." ! Regards, Mike.

Hi all,
Quick question...I've noticed that the headlights on the 1960 Stock were originally circular, but the Track Recording Train and Cravens unit have had rectangular headlights fitted, which appear to be very similar to those used on the D and 1983 Stocks - were these fittings removed from redundant 1983 DMs (and altered so that each cluster contained two headlights and one blank), or were they made up specially?
Regards,
Mike.
