Have the TC toilets always been in use for trips on LUL lines, or only when the stock is hired out? All other LUL stock seems to manage without them.

Andy Barr, in his lecture to LT Museum Friends, mentioned care is still taken to keep the museum’s ‘38 unit the right way round when returning to base, even though there is now no other unit it could work with.

The map at Bombsight.org records a high explosive bomb fell on Allsop Place sometime in 1940 or ‘41. The location is plotted upon Farley Court, close to where the theatre stage would have been.

I like the unique character of this station with the shed over the tracks at one end and the 2-road brick built shed in the sidings at t’other. Does anyone know why the sheds ended up this way? Probably not built at the same time I guess. The station entrance on the bridge is a bit ugly I suppose, never really thought about it before but it’s certainly not one of the many architectural gems on the network I also like wandering up Salisbury Road, there’s a few nice bars, shops etc. including a good butcher.

Is that going to be a record for the longest interval between closure and reopening? It certainly is a good contender, I guess it depends on the definition of a closed part of a station being reopened either in unchanged form or just being cut through in the process of new works such as the City and South London Railways (C&SLRs) short lived branch to King William street the tunnels of which have been encroached by the Jubilee line extension at London Bridge and will be further by upgrade works for the Waterloo & City line and realignment of the SB Northern line at Bank/Monument. Im not sure how the works at Bank/Monument have affect the aforementioned C&SLR tunnel, but if counted in the same respect then by the time works are due to have finished it would have been close to 122 years since they last saw active use. I think what you’re describing is obliteration, not reopening or reuse.

I suppose we ought to be grateful for the retention of the old BR symbol, rather than the corporate identities of each passenger service operator. When the formation of Great British Railways was announced an 'updated version' of the logo was promised. At the moment GBR're using the existing version on their transition-team website ( gbrtt.co.uk/ ) but - be afraid.

Apparently Harlow Council want the central line extended to Harlow which I am against. I would much rather it be extended back to Ongar. If anyone who knows the Harlow area well, they will understand why, it’s literally a trash area, possibly worse than Ilford. Clearly you don’t know the area well

Yes, there were two plaques. Organisers were aware of the possibility the Queen would open the route, but it was only confirmed two hours prior. A prudent bit of planning, tbh. When Prince Charles opened the Jubilee line to Charing Cross there was a last minute panic about what would happen if he needed a toilet. I had to run down the Strand to the Old Civil Service Stores to buy towels, soap, towel rail etc for the toilet in one of the new shops in the ticket hall. Of course it wasn't used. With thoughts of Mr. Milliband’s ‘Ed-Stone’ I wonder what will become of the Ed-Plaque. Were there strict orders to cut it into 500 pieces, and each one of those pieces cut into ……. or might it turn up in an auction someday?

The Queen typically looks grumpy at public events but she has a great smile in that news report. Ever since I first saw this picture I’ve suspected she’s a bit of a rail enthusiast on the quiet: img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/05_02/QueenSteamDM_468x314.jpgSo I wouldn’t be surprised if her staff always knew the opening of the Liz line, whenever it came to pass, would be high on her “I’ll go if I possibly can” list. Thanks- it gives a good insight and also some idea why ballast formations are still usually chosen for most railways (although not all) rather than a concrete-slab trackbed.

Why would temporary signage be necessarily significantly cheaper than temporary signage? Because someone has gone to great care (and no doubt expense, though maybe not as much as some might think (or maybe more)) to design and manufacture temporary signs which fit perfectly inside the frames. Which also makes me worry that they might be planned to be there for a long time since so much effort has been taken (hope I'm wrong). Whereas the same message could probably have been conveyed by a simpler and cheaper covering, temporarily fixed to the outside of these signs - no-one minds ugly looking temporary signs (so long as they're clear) if they're only going to be there a few weeks.

Would you be able to say whether the new workshop at Acton is now fully functioning, and the test trains or other trains inside it when required, or is there still commissioning or other preparatory work still to be done there?

Thanks for the pictures, I’m curious to know what the bits that stick up are for- reminiscent of the tray things you used to put the coins in for a ‘coin-op’ washing machine at the launderette 😀. No criticism intended- I’m sure it’ll be obvious when it’s finished.

Pre-local election purdah might be an issue - they can't have a big public launch in April. No need for a big public launch. Just open it, without fanfare, when it’s ready and have an “official opening” ceremony at a later date. This used to be common practice for big railway projects e.g. the Victoria Line.

I remember those huge elevated sheds that were originally part of the exhibition site. I never had the opportunity to go in but, since they survived such a long time, I always wondered what they were used for in later years.

At one time I started telling people I lived in St. Ratford. Some of them didn’t realise I was joking so I stopped. I should have known who Roy Brooks was but I had to look it up I was thinking of Ray Brooks the actor and voice, for a while, of Tramlink as well as, for ever, the voice of Mr. Benn.

The blurb includes “a replacement storage facility for the LTM will need to be provided as part of the development proposals”, but this doesn’t sound like good news for the museum- e.g. would a LUL rail connection be guaranteed?

A 4-car unit is preserved by Cravens Heritage Trains, stored at Hainault. So far, no doubt for very good reasons including other commitments, they’ve been unable to complete restoration or put it on display but let’s hope they do some day.

This work isn't by Network Rail or TfL rail, all NR did was award contracts to various private sector infrastructure companies. I believe Costain did the initial work on stations along the "North East Spur" (Maryland - Shenfield) with VolkerFitzpatrick given the final part of the upgrade at Ilford and Romford stations. Pedantic, moi? Not forgetting Atkins, who designed it. I expect history may record the new station was built by Network Rail, or maybe Crossrail, just as the original station was 'built' by the Eastern Counties Railway though probably few remember who their contractors were.

Is the LUL 4-TC unit loaned or hired out , what I mean does money change hands ? Hired out I assume. Andy Barr said, in his 2019 talk to the LTM Friends, both the 4-TC and Florence (LMS inspection saloon) were compatible with many kinds of haulage and available for hire to raise funds to contribute towards their their upkeep.

I remember reading an article by Mike Satow who said this replica, possibly LNWR-built but largely made of wood, fell apart after it was removed from Clapham but a few components were re-used in the working replica he built for the NRM at the time of the 1980 Rainhill 150 events. A minor correction to aslefshrugged - the Clapham collections were separated as soon as the museum closed in 1973 - only the LT collection went to Syon Park and thence to the LT Museum at Covent Garden which opened in 1980. The rest was owned by the National Railway Museum which opened in 1975.
