Briefly: to regulate speed approaching a signal where the overlap is reduced (an overlap is a safety margin beyond a signal).

I got thirteen correct (only getting the InterCity posteer wrong), some were educated guesses uses clues in the posters that perhaps should have been redacted.
For example "See England by Rail" isn't likely to be Edinburgh, an LNER poster is unlikely to be Newport and I doubt a poster for Hartlepool would advertise "Through trains from the north".

It's even on their Twitter so must be real I'm not going to breach forum rules by giving away the times of the first two trains that are alluded to in the tweet from the Overground. In completely unrelated matters, Gospel Oak station not long before noon or not long after is a lovely place to grab a brew and watch the trains go by, you might even want to go for a ride

Two images of a Elizabeth line 345 idling at the cordoned off Platform 8 having just emerged from the core. Idling? Have they been fitted with internal combustion engines then?

That’s Ealing Com Depot from Acton Cricket Club. That it be, I'm reliably informed it's also known as Old Actonians sports ground. The image is unmodified [Chris M]

@aetearlscourt is right that this is Old Ford but the actual answer on the card will be between Bow Church and Pudding Mill Lane/Liverpool Street (NR) and Stratford. You're sounding confident there xplaistow! It doesn't match the card, but I think you and @aetearlscourt are close enough to get the points on this one: Answer: Between Pudding Mill Lane portal and Whitechapel - Crossrail construction in June 2013 (click for a larger version)

That’s Chesham with its absolutely farcical “safety enhanced” benches. Safe benches, but an unsafe platform edge to the former bay. I'd love to see the risk assessments! Edit to add, it strikes me that they may be painted yellow to assist those with visual impairments - which is absolutely fine - though my point about inconsistency with the disused platform edge still stands.

I think gaps of 10 minutes were mentioned at one point but I'm not sure, which would certainly make for packed platforms and trains. A train every ten minutes, how awful; it's almost like living in the north. And that's just unthinkable.

Is 1 the Birmingham Airport people mover? There would appear to be an airport-related link between the images. There wasn't a link on the card, but you are correct: Inset 1: Birmingham International AirRail Link from below [Chris M] (click for a larger version)

Is the train on the right a Maglev? If not, then it's a monorail.
